i have an Octavia 1.8 4x4 turbo and the oil pump has failed, is this something that can be done at home or is it to the garage with a re-morgage?

How do you know it's failed? If you have had. A diagnosis they should be able to qoute you , either way it's cheaper to get your freindly independant to swap it out for you, nnever heard of oil pumps giving greif on these engines must be a one off or just bad luckeither way I'd get a second opinion as to what exactly is going on and more importantly why.
