Glovebox removal (fan resistor pack)

Featured Replies

Is the Roomster glovebox easy to remove? Can I get at the aircon/fan resistor pack without removing the centre console?

Actually, on a similar subject I need to change the pedal/throttle position sensor. Is this the same as the Fabia too, in terms of gaining access?

TIA,

Rich

You have to remove the top glovebox, two T20 torx screws the remove the airbag by undoing the three T30 screws and pushing up from underneath then you can see the resistor in the top of the heater box

Throttle pedal replacement is simple.

Three nuts are all that secure it (may have been as small as 10mm but working from memory here so could be mistaken) and one electrical connection to unplug. All accessible from the drivers footwell - you may need to remove a bit of sound proofing, but that just clips out of the way. I disconnected the battery before doing it just to be on the safe side.

There is a recall on the pedal so worth checking with your dealer to see if it's not the system.

Thanks Tech1e. Much appreciated.

Car is being serviced on Thurs, so will get them to check. Problem is that i'm 99% certain it would require another visit to the dealer to fix as the parts aren't available same day. Hence, it might just be easier to do it myself...

Cheers,

Rich

can you give more info on the recall please?

as i have a sticky throttle sensor or pedal return, sometimes when i come to a stop, or in traffic my idle insreases to 1100-1400rpm until i stick my toe under the throttle or give it a light tap

It's best not to give out specific information, only some times are known to be faulty. We have a recall to replace ones within a certain range. A simple phone call to a dealer will check if one is outstanding on your car. However we do check every car that's booked in for recalls.

Car dropped off this morning - they have a throttle pedal on shelf so is going to do for me. Said same thing, that it wasn't a general recall.

They seem to think it's a dashout job to change the resistor pack unfortunately, so I'll have to have a look myself at the weekend. Not sure if the newer Roomster is different to ours.

Second dealer who has give me the VAG bulletin to change diesel cambelts at 4 years. Thought the other one was fibbing as the service manual says 120k kilometres for non-pdf cars. We're only at 35k miles, so i'll put it off until just before the MOT in 6 months.

Cheers,

Rich

Just as Tech1e said it would be, can be changed with just the upper glovebox and the passenger airbag removed. Not sure removing the dash would make the assess any easier. Being left handed would be of more benefit!

Useful hints for amateurs like me:

- airbag lead is long enough, so doesn't need to be disconnected

- use a magnetic screwdriver on the T30 airbag torx screws, as it's too easy to drop them somewhere inaccessible

- pop the two clips on the right hand side of the airbag dashboard cover before pushing the airbag up from underneath, then unclip the glovebox side

- disconnecting the resistor pack lead first was easiest [before rotating it anti-clockwise 45deg]

- getting the resistor pack back in is harder because you have to do it blind

Having never worked on an airbag system before - is it necessary to disconnect the battery prior to starting work ? Does this provide enough safety margin ? I'd hate to set the bugger off inadvertantly !

No idea, to be honest. I was just glad I didn't have to disconnect/reconnect it :-)

The workshop manual seems to say turn off ignition, disconnect earth, leave for at least 5 mins. Then ground yourself, and disconnect the bags.

And for the reverse it says connect bags, TURN ignition ON, then reconnect earth. The ignition on bit I don't understand the reason for, but it says it in two places in the Elsawin manual...

I think the whole premiss is that it might be possible to trigger a bag with an unintended static discharge or some residual umph in the electrical system.

Whatever the disconnect/reconnect process is, I think touch them as little as possible is sensible. Carry them with the dischargable side facing away from you. Put them somewhere safe on a hard surface trim up. Don't drop them, don't work over the top of them etc. etc.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon...

Rich

Hi all, I've got a 2007 diesel roomster with climatronic and I can't see the resistor pack after taking out the airbag. Anyone got any idea as to where this would be?

Hi,

I've just suffered the cabin air fan fault (just works on position #4).  The car is out of warranty so looking like a DIY job.

Anyone know the part number and a trusted resource to purchase a replacement from?

Tks,

Graham
