Empty tank, could not start engine

Featured Replies

Hello, guys!

I've got Superb Greenline 2011.

By the end of the long trip (1250 km) I found myself stuck in front of the sea ferry check-in desk, being unable to start the engine)). You can imagine the "joy" of those behind me in the car queue and the reaction of a lady checking the tickets and passports))).

Of course the trip computer has warned my about the low fuel, but I was sure that I could drive around 70-100 km more after it shows zero. Actually it worked like this 2 times before (2 first tank fill-ups from the car purchase). However, probably because of the inaccurate computer calculations or whatever else I was able to drive max 20 km after the zero mark.

So, what happened: I've shut the engine, and after 2-3 minutes could not restart it. Maxi-dot at first told that I've got to refuel (0 range), and after 4-5 more attempts to start it suggested to service the engine...

Within 15 minutes I’ve managed to get 4 liters of diesel, which I poured to the tank. After that I could start the engine from the third attempt.

So, my question is: was this incident hazardous for the engine or any other devices, and do I have to contact my dealer in order to make some diagnostics or checks? I'm not sure, because the car seems to function well since then.

Thanks a lot in advance, and don't forget to refuel in time!))

Shouldn't run it down like that mate, you give the engine an irregular supply and also it makes the cat get hotter and wears it out quicker, rule of thumb is the minute that light and bing are seen and heard give the car a drink.

If you have no money that means you can`t buy anything,If your ECG reads zero, that means your dead.

Therefore if the trip computer says `0` that means you cant drive anywhere. It doesnt matter what

country you live in `0` means `0`. :wall:

JB.

Hi as a skoda tech and the type of engine you have, if you run the engine with no fuel you could seize the external fuel pump in the engine bay and at £1,100 with no labour and not bleeding the system via 5051b it aint a cheap job so in my advice to you just dont let it run out lol, Regards Glen

Thanks, Glen!

Sure, I'll be wiser next time. But still the question remains: shall I ask my dealer to check the car? there are no warning signs, and the car behaves properly. What's your opinion?

I hope that the car has some smart system, which did not allow me to start the engine. Otherwise I would have probably started it, drive a couple of meters and then fade.
