EPC

I have a 2010 Fabia 1.2 SE TSI. Recently the EPC light has been showing on the display, putting the car into safe mode, i.e. restricted revs and speed. When engine is turned off and on the EPC light goes off and everything is fine, sometimes for a couple of days. Im a driving instructor so this is not good if it keeps happening. I have had the RAC out but they could not find a fault or code number when they hooked upto the car. I then put it into the dealership, where they had it for whole day, and they could do nothing but upgrade the system. Alas about a week later the problem has returned, almost daily. I have booked it back into the dealership as its under warranty but they say if the EPC light is not on at the time then they might not be able to diagnose and fix the problem. This car is my livelyhood so cant afford to keep taking days of work, as they will give courtesy car but its not insured for driving tuition purposes.

Any help advice would be great.

Thanks.

P.S. The dealership also said that they have never heard of this EPC problem on the cars, but i see from google that this is not the case!!!

Update: Had RAC out today as the EPC went off during a driving test, luckily it was at end so was no problem. The RAC guys computer picked up codes 11825,11826 but no text. this was with generic diagnostic but i cant find any codes to match these?????????????????

Take it back to the supplying dealer, leave it there until they find the prob and insist on loan car. Its down to them to prove its not fault, but you can only do this at the supplying dealer. If you have finance on it, then its their car so get onto them and they can press the dealer.

As you say they're not VW codes and don't appear to be OBD codes either, though OBD would be used with emissions related faults which would put the engine management warning lamp on.

EPC stands for Electronic Power Control, the days of having cables operating the throttle are gone. Your car uses an electronic throttle pedal in conjunction with an electronic throttle body which regulates the air flow into the engine. The faults could be with the throttle pedal, throttle body, airflow or pressure sensor, brake light switch, brake light bulbs or anything else within the system.

If there is a fault logged and the warning light is on, then there will be a fault code recorded, if the light goes out, the fault code should still be there to be read but would have had it's status downgraded to intermiitent.

Thanks for the reply. They have said they will give me replacement car but that is no good as it is my business car and im fully booked for the next couple of weeks. i dont mind taking few days off but i cant do it if they turn around and say they cant find a fault and it continues to happen.

If you pursue your fiance they will be able to by pass the "no code no fault" responce from the dealer. They can loan you a car as its not fit for purpose, otherwise try and find someone with VCDS, there will be a code logged for it. If it comes on again, take a photo or video clip of it, if the RAC saw it happen then that should be enough for them to start a repair process. You can also send a letter to the supplying dealer giving them 7 days to resolve the issue. But they need to see it first.

Hi, there is a known fault on this particular engine which is that the turbo actuator rod jams up, its a mechanical fault and the car then goes into safe mode and v v slow.

May be worth mentioning to dealer?

I have a polo 6r with 1.2 tsi engine. I have the same problem. The fault code is: 11825: Mechanical malfunction of wastegate actuator. What I think is that this mechanical malfunction is due to a heat-problem. The heat within the engine compartiment can be the cause of sensing a faulty signal to the wastegate actuator, which then opens. causing no boost. I noticed that when the EPC light burns and I opened the hood, and then turn off the ignition, I see that the wastegate rod re-adjusts to its closed position. I'm no mechanic, so I might be wrong. My turbo is scheduled to be replaced in june.

Anyone suggestions what kind of problem this might be.

greetings Jeoffrey.

PS: I live in Holland, and these problems occured when the weather temperature raised from 10-25oC

Hi Jeoffrey, your Polo has the same fault as i described in post above yours, only thing i think is that its a design fault on the turbo and the rod just

slips slightly out of position causing the mechanical failure, perhaps you are right about it being heat related. Only cure is new turbo which must have been updated as you are

having fitted.

I hope you are right. I'm waiting for a call to fix me a new turbo. (they have some delivery problems). the funny thing is that i bought the car in november and until march i didn't have any problems. Since March the temperatures raised and the problems started. how can you explain a mechanical failure, that when you turn off the ignition, you see the rod slide back in its start-position. My idea was, that if it's mechanical, that the rod will be stuck in the "error-position". Did you get a new turbo? and was the problem solved..

Jeoffrey

The car that had the new turbo was all sorted and had no more issues, i think that the code they give " 11825: Mechanical malfunction of wastegate actuator", thats just

their wording for it but not sure, maybe it just moves more when ignition cycled?

New turbo will be fitted this week. I'll keep you updating, whether the problems really is solved...
