Loose Gearstick

Featured Replies

My car's gearstick is pretty loose.Does anyone knows what do I need to change to repair it?It engages every gear perfectly,so I guess it's not a major problem.I'm thinking of some springs or something.I removed the gearstick gaiter and made a short movie to see exactly what's going on.Down there,it may seem alright, but the knob is loose for like 1 inch in each direction.Going to the dealer is not a solution for me,I already went there and they are just...unprofessional.

Here is the movie:

Sorry I may be being thick but that gear stick looked ok?

Watch between 00:09-00:17.You only need like the smallest force to move the gearstick. After that 1 inch,I have to use "force" to move it.Maybe I put it wrong,it's not loose,it's exactly like in this movie below.

I'm not sure but it looks like you have a support pin missing, from the bottom carrier to the alloy casing with the hole directly above the bottom carrier, might be like that anyway, why not go to another dealer and show them if the first one is rubbish, the more you play with it the more they will have cause to say you broke it though, so I would be booking it in and don't be afraid to a SUK telephonist actually suggested it to me when I had trouble with the dicklicker.

You won't be able to do much other than make it worse, and a new stick is normally pushing £200

I don't think anything is missing.

I saw a few other photos of this part of the gear stick, like this one.

First dealer was like..."We don't have time for this crap".And the second one, after a whole day, told me to come again for further examination of the problem. And a third one is like 200 miles away, and I won't travel this distance for this problem.

Anyway,I was hoping this would be an easy fix or something.

Sit in another manual Superb and try the gearstick in that, I have a feeling thats how they all are. My previous Octavia was the same IIRC, and I think nearly all VAG cars are. If the superb is better and there is something wrong, chances are it will be the selector and linkage system under the car rather than the gearstick itself.

Ah I see that does look "loose"

I can't believe the dealers are so unhelpful/rude... Bast@rds

That's how I actually saw the difference.I tried another Superb and I even tried an Octavia with over 100.000 miles, and there is a huge difference.A few friends that had an opportunity to drive my car pointed me this problem.

I guess the only thing left to do get it back to the dealers.I found a newly opened Porsche/Audi/Skoda dealer in my region.

Normally when it happens it's a clip gone missing where the stick is installed, like a tensioning clip to keep pressure on a certain part, I understand how you feel regarding the dealers btw, they do suck and seem to have adopted the VW dealer arrogance virus.
