Hatchback boot leak - rubber seal filling with water?

Featured Replies

Last winter I looked in to water ingress in my boot, it was very minor but led to misting up of the rear window. I wasn't able to trace the leak and thought it might be to do with the rear wash pipe leaking through the boot lid trim, however I wasn't able to identify anything. Tonight I notice water is back, it collects around the rubber seal and leads to the plastic trim dripping when I open the boot (which is why I assumed it was the rear wiper). However, I haven't used the rear wiper for a while and the weather has been dry where I am until last night. Upon examination the rubber seal is full of water, when squeezing it water shoots out of the three air holes that face upwards on the seal. I've looked but can't see where water is getting in but it appears that it is.

Is this another weak point with the boot or is this different to the norm? What I am wondering is if whether I cut cut a slit underneath the seal, or whether I can make some new holes at the bottom of the seal pointing downwards so that if water is collecting it has a means to escape.

Will this compromise the rubber seal in any way or is it worth a try?

Lots on this its a common issue , i pierced the seal under the holes on mine to allow the water out as fitting drain holes on the top seem daftemoticon-0149-no.gif

Many thanks, had read about the rear washer pipe leaking but hadn't found anythign on the seal.

Can I ask what you used to pierce it?

Now sorted. A sharp pair of nail scissors is perfect for this job. After cutting a few small holes underneath the rubber seal water trickled out. A worthwhile mod for anyone experiencing water ingress or rear screen misting issues. It appear that the rubber seal is either badly designed or fitted.
