A70 Edinburgh to M74

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Was told about this route from my best mate who found it as an alternative from getting from fife down onto the M6.

The actual route 'proper' is just east of Edinburgh on the A70 at 'Currie'. From there travelling in a general south westerly direction is some amazing A road. Broken into a few parts by the 'towns' (more villages) of Carnwath, Carstairs, and Hynford Bridge.

Some amazing scenery (lakes, forests etc) and a great mix of road conditions (open straights, technical twisty stuff n and some great blind summit/downhill swoops). Strangely enough hardly anyone ever uses it and there are no cameras!

I've done the route several times over the past couple of years as an easy way of chopping out the boring motorway section from E'burgh to Glasgow before the long slog southwards on the M6, and every time it's been an absolute laugh, even in my wheezy old 1.9 A3. Hope to try it out in the Octy Estate when it finally turns up too. ;)

To make it even better, when the road finally peters out at J12 of the M74, you can lengthen it to include the B7078 then A702 and B7076 all the way to Gretna - all the time following the course of the M74/M6 southwards (turning a 32 mile drive into a 73 mile one!)

Just looking for an excuse to get up there again.

Cheers
