Octavia Estate Hard/Crashy Suspension?

So, the saga continues. Phone call from Skoda UK this morning to see how I'd got on with the dealer, they've had no communication from SMC Exeter at this point. Skoda UK phone SMC, then come back with "the dealer says there's a 'very slight' difference between your car and the other L&K but everything is within tolerance so there's nothing we propose to do about it. By the way your rear tyres are saw-toothing so you should pay for someone else to swap them and get the geometry checked!"

Leaving aside why SMC didn't tell me the rears were saw-toothed either on Friday or at the service 2 weeks before, if this is the level of Skoda's much vaunted customer service I'm gobsmacked and SMC Exeter and Skoda UK have just lost any future business. The Fabia's been firmly crossed off the list when the missus needs a new car.

I guess Matt down at Volkscraft will be getting the business for a set of Eibach springs and FSDs...

Big thumbs down from me for Skoda UK and SMC.

Just looked at my front springs and they are Redish orange and pink. only to blobs of paint on each spring.

This is Sports Suspension.

What about the rears????

If so then it looks like chris j might have standard then as his is different colour codes....then that means that his suspension should be softer...FUBAR damper like he thinks.....hhmmmm... B)

Sorry can't get to the rear springs to have a look, can't get me head under the car to look in the right place

Will see if i can borrow my next door neighbours ramps to have a look.

Three cars and no trolly jack???? Naughty!!! :giggle:

2 cars, and one scooter, I do have a trolley jack, but never used it as it's still in it's box :o

Suppose there is always a first time to use it, better read the instructions first though,

That why i was going to borrow my neighbours ramps, alot easier!!

I allways use trolly jacks and an axle stand as a back-up...don't like ramps!!......I have four axle stands....and a big 3ton trolly jack which weighs about 40kg!!! :p

Got Axel stands aswell and wedges, came as a complete set, but when it comes to mechanical issues, i don't know one end of a screwdriver from the other!!

Ok just bit the bullet and opened my Trolley Jack and read the instructions, jacked the back wheel up and the colour on the back springs is.....

1 Yellow and 1 blue blob.

and again this is Sports suspension.

5 man points for you.......we'll have you doing a full service before to long!!! :giggle:

SPORTS SPRINGS

1 x Redish orange and 1 x pink (Front)

1 x Yellow and 1 x blue (Rear)

STANDARD SPRINGS???

1 x pink - 1 x orange - 1 x blue (Front)

1 x yellow - 1 x yellow - 1 x yellow - 1 x white (Rear)

So that's the info so far........does look like he's got a FUBAR damper as all the colours are completely different!

To chris-j...what year and engine is your L&K???? estate???

Elegance 140 CR 2010 (MY2010 spec) Estate...

Front: Pink - Orange - Blue - Blue

Rears: Yellow - Yellow - Yellow - White

As stated previously, it feels harder than the Elegance 140 PD we tested - the CR wasn't available at the time - ours was built week 22 when they were introduced.

Hope this helps.

Steve

My 57 plate elegance estate rides a bit harsh when its empty, but thats on some pretty atrocious Lincolnshire roads. Its much better with some weight in the back.

My elegance model has ( 1.6tdi)

front = 1 pink + 1 orange + 1 blue

rear = 1 yellow + 1 yellow + 1 white

It's a 2010 1.8Tsi. Goes very well now it's had a Revo re-map. Much more responsive below 3000 revs now, as for above it...

Thanks for the help and info everyone. Skoda UK and SMC have washed their hands of it with "I should understand 2 cars of the same spec won't drive exactly the same" which to me is a complete cop-out so I'll sort it myself with an upgrade to Eibachs and FSDs (& maybe a WALK and a RARB B) ) and then not spend any money with Skoda or SMC where I have any choice in the matter...

Do you have a full size spare wheel or gunk?

Did the car you test drove have a full size spare or gunk?

Try putting a paving slab in the back (If you don't have spare wheel) and see if that makes any difference?

Space saver spare.

Don't know.

I've driven the car for 10 months with various loads and passenger numbers and while the car is slightly softer under full load it's still much harder than I'd expect for a car of it's class (ie not a full-on track car!). The suspension's hard at front and rear (you especially notice this going over speed bumps) which makes me think I've got all four dampers either from a bad batch or incorrect spec.

I have Koni FSD's...bloody brilliant!!! I didn't want to loose the comfort! And as for Eibachs...get them for springs if you want to lower it a bit as these are made to go with std dampers...so work ok with FSD's...check first with Koni and Eibach uk tech depts....very helpfull.

Also Walk bushes etc.....I've got a mixture of powerflex and Superpro on my car.....I think the Superpro bushes are better made re the steel crush tubes..... I might do a bit of searching for you...and post up on this thread B)

Is it an estate...you don't say?

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all, first post here, hopefully someone can help out...

I've got an Octavia II Estate L&K bought new last July, standard suspension set-up, no sports options. We test drove an Elegance spec which dealt with bumps and pot holes about as well as my old Focus (ie very well), which should be the same set-up as ours except for different profile tyres. The L&K we've found very hard and crashy over bumps, at all speeds, to the point my missus would rather travel in the old Focus we've still got. Thought it might just be the shocks bedding in or something similar but it's got no better over time. The car went in for it's first service last week and I mentioned it to the dealer, who blatantly fobbed me off with "It's perfectly normal, and our mechanics drive a lot of Octavia's so they should know!". Also dropped in at a local independent this morning (Volkscraft, Exeter, very helpful), who said that while the springs are soft enough, the dampers are very slow to rebound and suggested I get onto Skoda UK Customer Service.

Just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced a similar problem and if so, if you managed to get Skoda to do anything about it? I'm loving the rest of the car so I don't want to get rid but the suspension is bad enough I'd be looking at changing the shocks and springs if Skoda can't/won't fix it, & I don't want to go to that expense except as a last resort.

Just back from Matt at Volkscraft today. He has also Revo tuned my Octy Estate. One major thing to consider is the tyres. I had Bridgestones on my car when I got it. Now run Michelin 225/45/17s and it is much much better! Hope this helps!
