Columbus "three alternative routes" option - which route is which?

Featured Replies

A fairly simple question, but one which I can't find an answer for in the manual: if I set the "three alternative routes" option, how do I tell which route is Columbus's "economic", which is "fast", and which is "short"?

The three routes are numbered 1 to 3, and given different colours (red, green, blue); when there's very little difference between the three on the overview, it would be nice to choose the route I wish to take just based on what Columbus thinks the route is like, rather than having to review the entire route. This is especially true when I basically want Columbus running for the TMC-driven dynamic navigation.

On a related note, is it possible to tell Columbus to switch to Dynamic navigation announcements via the Dialogue voice control? It's a bit of a pain going back through the menus to turn it off, and there are times when I've had to let Columbus irritate me after it's kicked in, because the road conditions make it unsafe to fiddle with the touchscreen.

Good question. I always forget which is which.

Surely, the fast route will take the shortest time and the shortest route will cover the least miles, leaving only the economic to be identified by elimination? :)

I wish it were that simple :)

I've seen three different routes offered, all at 31 miles, all at 00:51 duration - running through it shows that they are different routes, but they're so similar that I have to run through each route to identify which one's which.

I suppose I could try and find a destination where there is a bigger difference and make a note; but I'm naturally a bit lazy, and thought I'd ask if someone else has gone to that effort first.

Just get it to calculate a long journey to anywhere - say >300 miles - which should make the differences clearer, I'd suspect. :)

I hope that the colours are "constant," IOW, that they're not just to show different routes, but also to identify them by type. I've yet to check this out.

I've often wondered which is which but I invariably go for the quickest(shortest time)

From the bottom up, number 1 is the all main roads and motorways, number 2 mainly main roads, number 3 all the back roads and possibly farm tracks

Interesting - I played a bit with mine, and the red one (2) is always the shortest; blue (1) appeared to be always the quickest, albeit usually only by tiny amounts, and green (3) must therefore be most economic.

I shall have to experiment more tomorrow, see if it's consistent with my observations thus far or with your unit. Out of interest, do you have the 7-digit postcode entry firmware? If not, that might explain the difference.
