Favorit Gearbox Oil - Where?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I`m fairly new to Skodas, having only reassembled two drive-shafts, replaced a radiator and a cylinder head over the last few months.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where do you put the gearbox oil when replacing or topping it up? The only place I can see is the speedometer gear but I dont know how to get it out without damaging it...

any help would greatly appreciated.

PS. Looking at pictures of Shaun`s Felicia in the gallery (V.Nice) I`d say the engine and gearbox are the same as my Missus`Fav. Are there any Felicia Owners with gearbox oil filling knowledge out there?

fill through speedo gear drive remove 9mm nut and pull out g/box takes 2.5 ltrs from empty but if topping up fill until you see oil.

Next! And how do you change the oil in a Haldex? Long job or DIY?

denis to change haldex oil is simple buy a cartridge of oil from vag dealer remove bung and squirt in ( cartridges are same in apperance as mastic tubes so you will need mastic tube gun) and re-fit bung (with new washer of course) however you will need special tool to replace oil filter though.

Cheers, Big K.

I took the 9mm bolt off and slid the retaining plate out but the speedo gear was stuck fast.

Next time I attempt it, I`ll try using a little WD-40 and some gentle persuasion with a mallet.

On a happy note the Old Skody-Pop (Affectionately Known as "Rusty II" - Not because it`s particularly rusty but because her previous car - a Cherry, was) Sailed through its MOT .

- Maybe because it creaks like a boat when you corner....you`ve gotta love `em!

Thanks for that, big k. I seem to recall that it is a 40 minute job at a dealership. Is that right?

dunno aint done one yet !

With regard to a sticky speedo gear, the last (and first) time did that job.

I first turned a blow torch onto it - trying the old expansion/contraction trick. Dont think it worked though, because I ended up lying under the engine, useing a flat head driver and tapping it out with a hammer.

Cheers John, Job Done.

I sprayed some WD-40 around the gear and used the retaining plate as a spanner, just tapping it from the rearward side with a small hammer - I mean err.. copper mallet and then levering it back with a stout screwdriver. After a few minutes of this it came lose and fitted back easily.
