Tie rod end / tracking rod help

Long story short... I've replaced both track rod ends and there's still some play on the wheel. When stationary if you turn the steering wheel left to right you can hear a knocking noise, so since I've replaced the track rod end, I asume it's the tracking rod or something els further up the steering rack, any idea what it could be?

Anyway, has anyone replaced these before or know how hard they are to do or any special tools needed.

I have the same problem was about to post about it, the only other place I can think of is the tie rod itself were it moves about,have yet to get one as there 98 quid from the stealers! There is a special tool to get it off but if jacked up and steering on full lock it is possible to get a set of grips onto the nut and slacken it

Well I'm a mechanic myself but at a Peugeot dealer, although have never replaced these before! I can get the tie rod end for about £15. I just though I best post something on here first to check really, just incase anyone has replaced one before!

And i guessed i'd be able to get the rod off, im more worried about having problems getting the new one back on!

They're in the region of £75 + VAT from the dealers and usually come with a track rod end. The fitting procedure is to disconnect the track rod end, release the boot for access and unscrew the track rod from the rack using a crows foot spanner, reassemble and check/adjust the tracking.

was speaking to jabbalad about getting mine done and he suggested doing it when the bushs are done as you have to drop the subframe to do it! cheap part but just a bitch to do apparently? correct me if im wrong luke i maybe thinking of something else haha

It will most likely be the steering arm to TRE that is bent. Dealer job unless you want a load of hassle.

regarding doing it yourself you could do the link arm itself but wishbone is rather a big job as the rear bush is part of the subframe.

I've seen a few of these done, basically the end of the track rod where it connects to the rack is a ball and socket, around the socket part is a hexagon head just before a screw thread, so that end of the track rod screws into the rack. There is a problem with access in so much that you can't get an open ended/ring spanner onto the hexagon head as there won't be enough room to move it. The answer is to use a crows foot head which is like the head of an open ended spanner, very short and it has a square hole in it, into which you can put a socket extension bar to bring it out under the wheelarch where you'll have enough room to swing a ratchet handle or similar to unscrew the track rod.

It shouldn't be too bad to do on a 2 poster ramp and quite doable with the car jacked up and on axle stands. It would be useful to maybe have an assistant who can put an opposite load on the rack when loosening/tightening the track rod to prevent the torque pushing the rack into the pinion.

On the other hand the problem could be to do with the rack and pinion meshing together. Working at a dealer, could you not get an opinion from a MOT tester?, assuming that your employer does MOTs.
