First time in nearly 50 years

Featured Replies

I was driving down the A16 today about 2 miles from home when a lorry threw up a stone and I had a nice star shaped chip in the screen. After getting home and leaving the car standing 10 minutes I found it had decided to develop into a nice foot long crack :@ I have fixed up through my insurance for National windscreens to come out tomorrow and replace the screen at a cost to me of £60. I see the screen has a black 'graded' edge to it and would hope they bring an identical one, I also know the seals on the windows can cause a problem if not fitted correctly. Any advice as to what to look out for or comment on when they come would be appreciated. Thanks guys. Just glad it didn't damage paintwork! First time I have ever had to do it in nearly 50 yrs driving so have been lucky I suppose! :'(

You will get a like-for-like 'graded' screen, but will probably have to play hardball and wait extra time to get a Skoda one.

I've had it happen a few times myself.

Thats not bad, a few years ago when I was driving a company van, I had four screens in as many months, my boss wondered what I was doing !

Hi ya Horkin, sorry to hear about your screen grief! Don't worry about a thing. The windscreen guys will fit a screen to spec. I've had mine done too. The seals are no problem either, there's a resin bond that actually does the sealing and gives the car extra strength, the seals are mostly cosmetic. It would be good if you can report back on the service you get from National windscreens though!

Just check it is seated properly, and that none of the edges look worn/chipped.

A few threads on the octavia forums did have problems, including a scratch on the paintwork.

Sorry to worry you....

Thanks Estate Man and thanks for all replies. Yes I am having it fitted tomorrow afternoon and will report back regarding National Windscreens. I have carried their "Glass Helpline" card for years and as I say haven't had the need to call them. They were very helpful and obliging in taking my distress call so hopefully that level of service will be continued tomorrow. I'll let you know!

Latest update....National windscreens arrived on cue with....you guessed it WRONG windscreen. They brought me a Mk 1 model. He tried to ring Lincoln Office but there was nobody there  So he rang Peterborough and they said from the computer there should be one in stock. The one they have is the one with the shade strip accross the top which I think should look ok so he's gone back to see if they have it. If so he'll come back today, if not he'll ring me when it's there. Not impressed at all plus his vehicle looked clapped and had a big scrape down the side plus iffy front tyres. Hardly a great advert for the company.

That's something I'd mention to head office.

Sorry to hear it.

Doesnt the windows also have an Aux Aerial in it which is the black line down the middle ? Is this only vRS ?

Good luck with the next visit.
