Panel Filter Benefit

Featured Replies

I would like to know the benefits of fitting a panel filter to my 2001 Skoda Octavia vRS ?

I realise that you don't have to ever change the filter again, I believe you just clean it but will it increase performance and/or BHP on it's own or for this type of benefit will other mods have to be done ?

Just do a search mate. This topic has been covered many times.

I did, couldn't find exactly the answer I was looking for which is why I posted the topic, thanks anyway.

Anyone ?

minimal amounts either way

Can't say i noticed any difference going from standard to green cotton panel filter.

Yes, i do not need to replace it so often, but it still needs to be cleaned periodically and costs several times more, so from a cost point of view it is not a good buy at all, but i thought it would be a good idea in one of many moments of weakness i have with the VRS.

the big differance is noise.. u can hear the turbo and reserc valve much more.. im noticed a big diffreance with the cotton green filter and would recomend !

I always swap out panel filters for K&N panel filters. Notice slight torque increase and it doesnt need to be cleaned that often and never replaced. Haven't done this on my vRS as it came with a K&N 57i kit on it . Sounds like a jet taxing when on light boost, so far this isnt annoying me :) do it , its better than standard replacement and low maintenance and it may even free up a bhp and improve economy just dont over oil it (new ones come preoiled) otherwise it can allegedly screw up your MAF sensor. This i have never experienced and those that did must of had it dripping or something :p

Performace is slight, airflow is better than std. Noise is slight over std, even more with a after market DV.

Maintainence is less that a std one.

Better mod is to get more air into the airbox.

Never heard of a MAF being screwed up on a VRS by a over oiled filter , those scooby boys invented that up. But that is not to say go ahead and swap a air filter to prove it. :giggle:

I had a cone filter on my Vrs but was told to remove and change to a panel filter, due to the fact the cone filter was taken in the warm air from the engine. Which panel filter would you recommend? There is a few out there to choose from, It needs to be ideal with a change of power increase as my Vrs goes in for a remap in a few weeks

STD is fine mate.

They add more noise and dont really do anything else! apart from let in very fine particales of dust and dirt that a paper one wouldnt!!

There is no gain on performance, so tobe honest stick with standard

no benefit over standard - don't waste money - get a new oe filter instead

Standard one is fine.

They're used on the audi TT etc with 225 and 240 bhp, so well specced for the job.

A lot of people who notice a performance difference, are the ones that go from an old paper filter to a shiny new cotton one. You would get the same effect with a new OEM one.

 edited for scientific accuracy B)

Yeah that's what I meant :D

:D no worries, wasn't having a dig at you

the claims that some folk make about aftermarket filters are hilarious - especially when they never ever compare them like for like with a new oe filter on a proper dyno testbed

think someone did compare an old dirty oe filter and a brand new K&N and to say there was hardly any difference was a bit of an overstatement <1hp IIRC

Get a pipercross panel filter.

I got slight increase in mpg and diverter valve noise :).

So you may notice a sligtly better mpg with a K&N filter but the best benefit is never having to pay for the cost of a new filter every service, that's a good enough benfit for me.

True, you don't have to replace it, you just have to buy a cleaning kit and faff about cleaning it.

New filters aren't exactly expensive are they? How many can you buy for the cost of a decent panel filter?

p.s. Not wanting to start an argument BTW..

proof of better mpg from those who are promoting it - or is it just any new filter that will improve mpg?!?!?

Having used one before, IMO it is 100% placebo effect.

I can concur with that.

My old vRS had a Pipercross foam filter, and I did notice a difference in power and induction noise.

However......

The old paper one was nearly black and over 60k old (Don't shoot me, was like that when I bought it :D ).

When I tried a new paper one, it was exactly the same as the piper one.
