Clutch judder – again!

Featured Replies

Agggghhhhh, what is it??? :'(

I've had the Superb nearly three months now and I've tried, I really have, to drive around it, but trying to park, or just being in slow, stop/start traffic is a nightmare. You have to really concentrate and time it so you release the clutch a split second before applying the speed pedal, otherwise the car judders like a beaut until you up the revs.

In all other respects I love the car, but this 1st and reverse thing is killing it for me. The clutch never slips, and holds well across the rev range, all other gears are fine, and sometimes, if I have timed the release properly, it's like nothing's wrong, but manoeuvring into a parking space is becoming quite stressful :(

At first I thought it was a diesel characteristic (never owned one before) but it's not right is it …? I get the feeling that the clutch will last forever like this, but apart from forking out for a new clutch and DMF, what can I do about the 1st and reverse judder? :S

Check your oil level. My 1.9pd100 classic SUperb can have clutch judder if overfilled with oil slightly after a service.

My fabia vrs used to judder like this until i replaced the console bushes and ARB links. It was worse when cold as well

Not sure if this helps but maybe a pointer in a certain direction

Mine does it a bit too. 1.9 with 81,000 miles. I think you just need to balance it right, it's a heavy car to get off the line.

Best of luck,

Rob

mine had same problem until i over heated it in traffic jam on m62 at 13.700 miles cost 650 to repair. no funding from the manufactuer off happy drivers. but new clutch completly cured this issue now covered 20.000 06 2.0 tdi any oil pump bills?

Thanks everyone. It does seem to be a characteristic (manufacturer fault :() of the heavy diesel engine but it still shouldn't be doing this.

I'll stick with it and start saving for a clutch and possibly go SMF when the time comes.

It's not overfill of oil because I check it regularly and it's just under the max. It's done it from the off when the oil was right down, too. It's also whether it's warm or cold - makes no difference.

Oh well, I'll keep on juddering along :S

My AWX Superb used to judder slightly when I bought it, the problem being generally worse when cold.

I bought the car for towing and after I had fitted the towbar and given the clutch a few good workouts, the judder disappeared and has not returned. I do tow with it several times a week though.

I think the clutch design is marginal on these cars and I have driven several others with this problem. Better applications engineering to the clutch would have prevented this.

General causes of clutch judder are soggy engine mounts (a B5.5 weakness), oil on the facings or a faulty DMF. If the car has ever been apart, a distorted driven plate caused by hanging the transmission on the input shaft will also cause it.

Try giving the clutch a gentle work-out but don't overheat the DMF. Clutch lining life is generally good on these cars - if anything, the linings are probably too hard.

Cheers Roto

I'm thinking of loading the boot with bags of gravel and see if a couple of hundred miles with that will sort it, as per one of your earlier posts.

I can't imagine that this judder is just surface contamination though. I'm reckoning something's bent, or just plain knackered. :S

Only time will tell

mine needs track control arms so may be the suspension as well!!! It has had an oil pump failure at 55k but skoda fitted new engine under warranty I believe as it was my friends company car at the time and they spent a lot of cash at the dealer!!
