A request / plea to Skoda on bi-xenons and high beam

Featured Replies

There are no H3 Halogens in a Yeti with bi-Xenons. As stated before any car that also has halogens just has good old fashioned Xenons and they cannot be called bi-Xennons.

So Skoda made a mistake when they clearly labelled mine Bi-Xenon on the headlamp bezel? Do you understand what Bi actually means?

Johann, the Superb does indeed have a Bi-xenon headlight (the single xenon bulb is used for both dip beam and then high beam with the aid of a shutter system) the halogen light AIUI is purely there for flashing the headlights when the lights are turned off (they also come on when the xenon's are on for some reason).

Which is fine and I've said as much before in that I realise the Superb is different. But someone should not go uppetiy from down under about things they clearly understand incorrectly! Not my fault that Škoda correctly labels the Superb as a bi-Xenon system but ALSO add Halogens to do a completely seperate THIRD function!!!!! On any car out there the general meaning of a bi-Xenon is as I described it and ONLY relates to the Xenon bulb doing TWO things (and NOT as Ozsko understands it as on a car with both Halogens and Xenons). On any other car out there Xenon means that it does ONE function and the Halogens the other. Having Halogens for flashing only/supplying secondary light (as they are always on on the Superb) is a very peculiar "hybrid" system of sorts.

I do? news to me. I think you need a comprehension lesson. Google is now the ultimate definer of all things in this world is it? So is if have a bi xenon headlight and the car happens to have a H3 globe that lights on high beam and is activated by the dip switch to come on when high beam is selected then the car no longer has Bi xenons? Yeah, right!

I give up. B) Can't keep explaining English and what GENERAL CONSESUS IN THE WORLD AT LARGE means again and again and again and again. I really give up. Live forth and believe whatever you like, I really don't care.

Johan,

I have on my drive a test vehicle from a manufacturer that shall remain nameless. Not a Skoda nor VAG.

It is equipped with bi-xenons as I think we all understand the term. A single pair of HID lamps providing both dip and main beam. When the dip switch is operated to select main beam a small shutter moves in the lamp unit and causes the bi-xenon unit to provide a high beam light.

There is also a second pair of lamps with H3 halogen bulbs. These are illuminated when high beam is selected and are on continuously, and also flash when the flasher is operated.

This is an excellent set up as the H£ bulbs are bright B) of the very very white / blue colour and don't show up tremendously yellow as normal halogens do against HID also the beam control is of the pencil type and really fills in the distance and picks out things well.

Now am I wrong in thinking that this car has bi-xenons?

The early HID were exactly as you describe, a pair of HID that just showed dip and a second pair of halogens. This worked OK but wasn't wonderful. However it seems that manufacturers may be going in two or three directions.

1. like VAG with a single pair of bi-xenons which have high beam assist or automatic range adjustment depending on what they call it.

2. Some with bi-xenon and second pair of halogen

3. Some with old style HID just on dip and second pair of halogen.

The purpose of the OP was to ask Skoda not to go for option 1 and keep with option 2.

edited due to smileys inserting themselves in an odd way. :(

Whatever Škoda decide lets hope they go for the best - and I can't complain about the system on my Škoda I have to say. If they ignore generally accepted naming conventions so be it. As long as it illuminates the road ahead all will be well, regardless of what it is called!

Though lets pray the Chinese (or such like) don't start selling cars here in Europe with ABS and ESP in the brochure as standard when in fact they mean (contrary to general convention) that this actually stands for Automatic Beverage System (cupholder) and Electric Seatbelt Pretensioner. Changing what things stand for causes confusion to the general public and should be avoided. Victor now off his soapbox. Roger and out.

There's got to be a joke about Dayright Lunning Rights in there somewhere...

A condescending Pommy says I am an upstart? thanks for the lesson in internet relations. I notice no one took up the cudgel with you to dispute what Skoda term a bi-xenon. Sorry to everyone else for how low this thread has sunk but I can't let that statement go by. Moderators may like to remove this post if they want but I just found it too tempting not to respond. My apologies to all others here and please don't take offence from this post.

I have stated many times now that I accept Å koda has labeled theirs peculiarly! (See posts 27 and 31) Especially since they call both the systems on the Yeti and the Superb Bi-Xenon yet the Superb has the peculiarity of added Halogens that the Yeti does not have. See easy to spread confusion even further!

And I apologise if I was condescending. Was not my aim.

I also stated "Roger and out". So this is now really "Roger and out" on this topic for me.

When you next do an update, please please do NOT do the thing that VAG appear to be doing on the other brands and when fitting bi-xenons also take away the separate pair of incandescent main beam lamps.

I have just come in from testing the 100 watt H3's I put in to help with the main beam xenons. It is better but I would not do handstands over it but the globes only cost $12 so I did get value for money. I need all the light I can get as I am an old fart and the kangaroos and deer don't wear reflectors around here.

I went for these H3's ......

Elk are the same, AND stupid.

I'm almost resigned to this solution. Just think it will look wrong on a Superb. Ok on a Yeti though.

I just wish the Halogen high beams could be adjusted, mine are great if you need to see who's riding on the top deck of a double decker bus.

The adaptive low beam set-up is great and it's set up perfectly, this is the reason I've not been to to a stealer, so they don't bu*ger that up. It appears the inner highs use a seperate reflector as it moves about when you change a sidelight, but it's not got any adjusters :(

The amount of high beam light available is still pretty good to me, but it would be even better if it was all aimed properly.

I was the same. Frightening owls in the tops of trees.

Dealer fixed the problem very quickly.

I have a couple of Cibie Super Oscars in the garage and suggested to SWMBO that I bolt them on the front. This is a family forum so her retort can't be printed and I thought she was a refined lady as well. :)
