My TFSI K&n Typhoon CAI custom install

What does everyone think? Still need to get heat shield though.

Have you noticed much difference (other than noise!) in performance and throttle response? I'm not sure looking at the pics how much difference this would make, it looks more like a short ram intake. When I fitted a typhoon to my last car it was installed down by the wheel arch to ensure it gets lots of clean cool air flowing over it. I'm not sure how effective it would be in that position.

How do you think it performs?

as i posted in the other forum

wow :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:

it'll work though, not a fan off the honeycomb or aluminum foil, bit to heath robinson for me.  Also how old is that filter, it looks ancient.  What pipe work is it?  Is it matched to the OEM internal diameter  to ensure the MAF sensor is reading the MAF correctly if not the car will be permanently adapting the LTFT to ensure the AFR is correct in order to compensate the airflow.

Looking at the shield behind the filter it could go down further between the radiator pipe and the radiator itself, you can see a gap there.  The ITG shield makes a complete seal.

what material is underneath the alu foil?  The ITG shield doesnt need it as the foam is dense and the high presure cold air into the enclosure will ensure it keeps the hot engine air from egressing in.

If you were going all heath robinson you should have gone the hole hog

Ive seen plenty of guys bodge an intake together and not make much in the way of gains due to poor filter choice/size, incorrect internal MAF diameters etc. For example i was given a pipercross venom intake. I fitted it and it made the airflow less than the stock intake could make. lost around 18g/s which is around 20hp on a stage 1 car.

I bought typhoon second hand. But will give it a clean sometime as it def looks like it needs one i got recharge kit at my dads but i needed car today so i couldnt do it. Will prob do it next week. May buy the ITG foam filter soon though when funds allow.

In between the foil insulation is 2 sections of very dense foam prob more so than the itg set up. The second skin foil stuff is on to keep heat and cold air from mixing and 2 to help reduce sound. I used foil to keep heat away from filter hence not blocking bottom of it as looking at set up i didnt see it nessaccery on the VRS as theres fresh air coming from below the car.

The pipe is wrapped in magmashield which is much more impressive than the stuff i have seen other people use.

That dbilas set beter had a filter on end of pipe going down lol.

As for oem maf size i did a quick measure and it looks almost same size.

As for the effectiveness of location look at the filters available apart from dbilas they all more less follow same route apart from nuespeed which has an add on but would be prone to getting soaked in wet conditions due to bottom of car being pretty open to the elements i.e. front grill and wheel arch space.

the honeycombe looking foil is actually weven fibre material on sticky tape impossibale to rip by hand. I did however test it by putting a lighter direct below it for around 1min then 5 seconds later touched it to my supprise it was luke warm and not hot at all 5 seconds more it was back to normal temp.

I did the same test on part of the pipe with out the wrap and it actually burnt me.

As for performance its to early to say as i have only driven to gym and back. Will report 2moro when i get vcds on it maybe.

Vcds shows 204g/s intake mass thats up from 190g/s. That's an increase of 14g/s with let's say a very dirty filter no heat shield and running on 95octane where as my 190g/s was running 98 octane.

The recovery of intake temp is rapid as well. Will log again once filter has been cleaned and oiled and a few tanks of 98 ron.

Using the conversation Maf divided by 0.81

Before intake 190g/s 234bhp

After intake 204g/s = 251bhp

As a comparison my EVOMS on my K04'd car has an intake mass of 270g/s

Here is my EVOMS TSi Intake kit on 1.8 TSi.

My old typhoon came with a sock to keep it dry and prevent hydro-lock. You still need to be careful, (no driving through deep fords) but day to day down in the opening behind the bumper is generally a good place.

It's good that you've measured some kind of performance gain, often these things are down to the placebo effect and there are no real gains.

As a comparison my EVOMS on my K04'd car has an intake mass of 270g/s

Although a K04 2.0 will always flow higher anyway, would anyone else with a k03 like to post their readings? Not being rude Harry just pointing it out for those who don't know

On average ko3 cars are around 190g/s to 200g/s when Mapped.

koe3 depenending on map 200-240g/s.

When you say depending on map do you mean like stage 3?
