identifying 140 from 170

Featured Replies

Quick, simple idiots guide needed please...

I'm looking at a few Superb estates at the moment and am pretty set on what I want, including the 170 CR engine. I have a PD 170 in my OCtavia vRS now so do not want to buy a new car with a less powerful engine.

Simply put, I need to know if there's a quick way to tell the 140 from the 170 - either by external markings or by something quickly identifiable under the bonnet. I have seen some cars listed as being "PD" (which I took to mean the old 140 engine, as opposed to "CR" for the 170) but then when they are put into certain search engines (on insurance companies for example) they show up as 170s.

How can I be sure that the particular car in front of me is a 170 and not a 140?

Ta for tolerating my technical ineptitude!!

Phil

Pretty sure that the PD engine was not available in the Superb estate. The only visual way I know is the 170 is badged TDi and the 140 TDi - BUT badges can be easily removed or changed so i would not trust that 100%.

If you are physically viewing the car then the V5 will be the best bet

It's TDI for the 170, TDI for 140, but as Gizmo states, badges are only badges.

Of course it is :giggle:

In my defence .....painkillers with a glass or two of wine are great :drunk:

i think the difference in the sound of the engines will tell. you the cr is a lot quieter than the pd.but the pd seems to have more shove than the cr but that's only my opinion.

The big Skud with the 170 will be the one furthest in front, and getting further away all the time. Quickly. :p

But the 170 and 140 are both available as a CR, I am pretty sure the 140PD was not available in the estate anyway?

The PD Engine is not being made any more..ALL CR now

Smoother and quieter too

Hi

Superbs used to have a sticker in the spare wheel well with colour codes and build info on it.

On Superb I there were two 1.9 powers....105 and 130 PS. These were shown in kW as ...IIRC...77 or 95 kW

Current Skoda literature will have the KW for both 140CR and 170CR- I estimate they will be 103 and 125 KW respectively.

Maybe a current combi owner can tell you where the sticker will be and how the kW is displayed - IIRC it is in plain language

as 103kW etc etc.

Good luck!

Those KW figures are also quoted on the sticker in the service book.

CR 170 Type and size are indeed on a sticker in the spare wheel well, a 170Hp is a 125KW. The letters on the tailgate are a Chrome T, Red DI assuming they have not been changed. Details are also in the Service Book, and the engine type e.g.CBBB CFGB are also on the black sticker on the o/s door pillar, they are the vertical letters at the front.

Using a VIN search will also confirm all the vehicles details.

I recomend one VIN search anyone interested can PM me.

Just take it for a drive and jump on the throttle, you will soon know if it is a 170hp motor.

For completeness the 105bhp 1.6CR is badged TDI ( no colour)

Just to put the record straight the Superb 1 came with a 105 ps, 115ps and 130 ps
