A story in two stages...

Featured Replies

I bought my totally standard vRS in August 2008 with the full intention of leaving it standard.

I went to my first rolling road day @ Impossible Performance where it ran 182BHP as standard...

Then one day R-Tech came to my work place in Surrey to remap my mates Golf GTi, I had a go in it and got him to do mine.

Nick checked the car out, did some logging and told me that there was a slight drop in boost. I told him to go ahead with the remap and he did some more logs and told me there was definitely a difference between the requested and actual boost response and if I wanted the map taken off he would give me a refund.

It was still a big improvement over standard so I kept it. Nick left me with a couple of things to check out (DV, pipework, etc) and if I wanted to take it to his workshop in Leicester he would give it a good going over to solve the problem.

I went to a rolling road day at R-Tech in October 2009 where the car ran 200BHP (just). Nick gave the car a quick check (there were 30-ish cars there) and told me the turbo to pancake pipe was leaking and again told me to bring the car in during the week and he would sort the running problem.

Leicester is a bit of a trek for me so I have been putting it off while I have carried on tinkering with the thought of going stage 2.

The problem with the boost had got slightly worse where it would only boost to 0.8 BAR, a fault that was partly traced to the N75. This was replaced but it still wasn't hitting 1 BAR until around 43-4500 RPM and then it was struggling to hold it there.

Again, I was on the phone to Nick as I was at a loss and thinking the worst.

I explained the mods I had done and what it might be and somehow the conversation got around to me taking a trip to Leicester.

So early Monday morning me and Clive take a nice drive to Leicester with the car being booked in from 9AM-12PM.

We arrived nice and early, hit the snack van and then the boys turned up to open the workshop.

Nick arrived at 9AM and got to work.

The first (of many!!) power runs showed it was hitting 220BHP & 192 lb/ft but it was coming in late.

After checking everything out Nick traced the fault to a lazy actuator which was adjusted.

The next 3 hours were spent on the rollers with Nick working his magic producing a fully custom map, smoothing out the slightest imperfection until he was totally happy with it...

The result being... 241BHP & 273 lb/ft...

Nick worked like a machine finally finishing at 1:30PM.

He explained in detail, too much detail :), exactly what he was doing and why.

The man knows waaay too much about the 1.8T and if you are thinking about going down the remap route I would not hesitate to recommend R-Tech for both product and customer service.

PS

I know there has been a lot of arguing regarding remaps lately and this is by no means a dig at anyone and I wouldn't want it to be treated as such but to say I am happy is an understatement :)

Excellent

Always good to hear about great service.

what are your mods mate? Those are very good numbers. Think I need to get mine back up to Nic for a stage 2 map.

Thats filthy ;) lol. I wish my car was pushing that sort of power! Out of interest... for all the extra effort he put in did he charge extra or was it all in a days work?

@Mike.. Do not do what I did and hesitate. It is WELL worth it :) (And my mods are listed below)

@DBP... If I told you the price you would be disgusted, I spend more going out in Wimbledon for the night.

Nick has a very good attitude when it comes to the payment, a couple of packets of Hob Nobs go down very well and will give you more discount than belonging to any car club.

The extra time that he put in was mostly his fault as he wants the delivery as good as it can be :giggle: , I was sweating the cost but he didn't charge me a penny more.

He spent 30 minutes smoothing out a slight dip as the power eased off that I wouldn't have noticed driving it.

It was also putting out 247 BHP at one stage but he reduced the BHP and increased the torque to reduce cylinder temperatures.

There was also a golf there (for the last 5 weeks I think) running a CR hybrid that he had taken the turbo off and sent back to them a couple of times for faults and he was just boxing it back up as it had shot 1/2 a vane down the exhaust. The customer phoned up while I was there sweating how much it was going to cost and Nick told him there was no difference in the cost, he just wanted it sorted.

He is a true 1.8T enthusiast and his Golf, and I can say this from hands on experience, is amazing.

Oh, and the last graph is the final power run from quite a few power runs so the FMIC seems to be working well

Ah Mitcham..........used to live in Morden- miss that part of the world. Nice post.
