Morning all

Just before I spend a silly amount of money fault finding at my local garage I though I'd stick a post up here...

First things first... On a cold start up after the secondary pump has done it's thing, the old girl she is very stuttery in 1st under 15mph and kangaroos... I'm thinking as it's getting close to 100k now it just needs a little more time to warm up? As soon as I get above 15/20mph it's smooth as....

Second thing is the rattly rear end.... GOD how this annoys me, it's like I have a bag of spanners back there!!

The throttle body may need cleaning.

Also take a look at http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/54167-splutter-is-doing-my-head-in/

Rattles from the rear end could be your beam bushes.

Cold start and the symptoms you quote are 90% temp sensor buddy. A £20 part from dealer or TPS and about 5 min to fit. Very easy and a common problem. When the temp sensor fails or is faulty there is no signal to tell the ECU to pump more fuel in(5th injector) when engine cold until car warms up, so the ECU thinks the car is already warm. Imagine a car with a carburetter and the auto choke does not work, same thing. It is a DIY job.

The age of the miles should not effect how the car runs if it is looked after.

The rear end is more than likely the rear beam bushes as they get tired over time and allow movement of the beam, You can notice that especially when driving over bumps and pot holes. I can only describe the effect as "crashing" or "dropping". That job is not really a DIY unless you are a keen enthusiast.

I have done it and posted a guide on the tech section.

hope this helps

As always a great response, thanks a lot!!!

Check the rear springs are intact and also the bottom shock nuts.

While you are there, fit a RARB :)

Heat shield on the exhaust/cat?

Oh, also check the centre exhaust brackets as they can also snap.

mine has this same problem, where is the temp sensor located and does it have any other name as i would think theres a few temp sensors???

coolant temp sensor, do a search theres probably loads of threads fits in a plastic housing attatched to the head, held in with a plastic 'u' shaped clip

thanks bond007 for the clarification
