12v socket

Featured Replies

Really sorry is this has been discussed here before (new to the forum and tried searching but couldnt find anything on it).

I understand that the socket is permanent live and there are a few things thatc an be switched/pressed to turn it on/off. I also understand that not all these things work on every model hence my following Q.

What is the common method of modification that people apply when wanting a switched power supply? I am contemplating finding the wire under the trim and putting an inline swtich to enable me to turn it off.

Or, do you guys just put up with it?

Many thanks

I've just left it, why does it matter if it's permanently live or not? if nothing is plugged in, no power is being used...

I want to get a bluetooth fm transmitter but it has a long arm and I'm thinking I'll probably have it plugged in the whole time if I can.

If there is not an easy way round then I'll just have to live with it as you said.

I find that the permanent connection is very useful for my battery trickle charger that I have fitted a cigarette lighter type plug to. Lets me trickle charge over those dark winter nights without having to lift the bonnet up and clip to the battery. I also use it to charge the mobile phone that I keep in the car - just plug it in and leave it overnight without worrying about leaving the ignition on. Would be good too for one of those dashboard solar power chargers. Having come from a Vauxhall with the ignition switched type of socket, the permanent live is definitely better.

One of these days I will have a go at this. My garage isn't heated so I'm waiting till the summer to take the dash apart.

To wire up the towbar electrics I went straight to the engine fuse box - but that isn't switched.
