Columbus firmware update problem

Featured Replies

Basically my Columbus started as a 2684, then was upgraded to 2724 before I got it.

I retro fitted a MFSW and am in the process of installing a fix to make it work with maxidot and MFSW.

Mike very kindly sent the CDR disc (which originated from vRSstu I believe). I put it in, and after having to press setup, eject and mic it eventually got underway.

I left it going for a while and came out to check process there and the disc was ejected and it says SWL error, error description. Then in small writing it says about putting it on a different media etc.

I put the disc in again and it was at 43%, but it ejected straight away and the same thing displayed.

Now I'm too afraid to even breathe incase I brick it etc. What's the craic, is this an easy solution?

I know the disc has worked before, but I'm out if my depth now!

The radio just displays; "software download- source activated, searching for SWL image" all the time, even when driving and when the car is off and key out.

An I going to have to disconnect the unit tonight?!

If I put the disc back in it allows me to go through the whole procedure again and starts at 26%. But then when I cone back to the car it says the same error.

Would it be worth trying the file on a different disk? Could it be as simple as that?

I assume the recovery file I need to try if all else fails is the 1 at the top of this link?

Same thing happened to me going from 2724 to 2764. The first disc which was burnt from the 2760-all iso stuck and ejected saying error and it just sat at the insert disc screen. I didn't try to re do the disc, I just went to a different firmware. Did that on a new DVD and ran it through and it went on fine, took nearly an hour I think. I had read posts saying do them on a cdr and others saying the Columbus prefers a DVD. Might be worth a try putting the file onto a DVD and seeing if it gets past the error if it's not liking the cd?

Only thing is the one that worked for me was Octavia specific, not sure what you're working on just now.

Use nero or simillar to do a CD to CD copy onto a different brand of media and burn it at the slowest speed possible then give that a go in the columbus.

Neither am I sadly!

It's in the car trying again, if it fails I'll go and get some DVDr's.

DVDRs are even more unreliable since the ISO image was originally of a CD.

Mannyo, literally just copy the disc I have onto a better brand CDR? I've just realised that the disc I have hadn't actually been used before itself, just the file on it.

If I copy it could the problem lie on the recording?

What if I download the file again from that vwnavi link posted above?

it wont be the downloaded file, if you have the .iso file just use that and burn another disk at the slowest possible speed. The faster you burn the more potential there is for an error to be placed ontto the CD.

I don't have the file, I was just sent the disc. I'll try copying it first then download it from josi's thread.

Worst case scenario, I assume the recovery disc shod rectify it!?

Just in case if you're stuck I can send you a disc with all the iso's of the ones I downloaded if it helps and you can then burn any one you want to whatever media you want like mannyo said.

Which one are you using at present then? And what did your unit start with?

As my unit began as 2684, then was 2724 before I started messin agound today, do I need to go back to 2684 before I put 2764 on?!

Ok, I download both the fix itself and then the recovery, but neither are being taken by the Columbus. It just shows the Skoda start up screen with the red strips top and bottom stating the system is not able to start up and please insert SWL cd. I've tried pushing eject, mic and set up but nothing happens. Just keeps taking the disk in and firing it out!

For the recovery, is it literally just 1 nrg file?

It had 2724 on it from new. That was on it's sticker and on the secret menu information. I then updated with just the Octavia fix and not a full firmware from the page of josi's files. It still showed as 2724 after that but did not sort the maxidot issue.

Next I went to the 2760_all iso file. That was the one I got the error and failed install on but I had used a DVD rather than a CD. At this point it would do nothing and asked for a swl disc. I then used the 2760 with Octavia modification iso, this installed and it now shows 2764 in the menu.

I never tried the recovery disc or anything so don't know how they work, I just put the firmware disc straight in and it was recognised.

Is it not accepting your firmware disc either now?

If I'm stating the obvious here then sorry but you are definitely burning a disc from an image and not just copying the file itself straight onto the cd?

Lol, all I'm doing is right clicking on the nrg file and selecting send to CD drive, and writing it on that way.

I assume that's not correct!?

That could be it. The files themselves contain all the information needed to recreate the full disc they came from but they need put on the right way to make a useable disc. I think what you've done is just put the downloaded file onto the disc. They'll normally have the file extension .iso .nrg or .cue

I use Nero to do mine. I just start Nero up then cancel the create new disc bit and click Recorder then click Burn Image. You then have to select the image file you want to do from wherever you have it, desktop or whatever. You should then get the recorder options so as mannyo said use the drop down box to pick the slowest recording speed. You might have to tick "Finalize CD" if it is not already selected. This should give you a finished cd that the Columbus can read.

Like I said I haven't used any of the recovery files so I don't know what they'll do but if you use this method to make your discs for firmwares or fixes then they should be readable in the Columbus.

If you don't have Nero you can download a free trial at nero.com and I think there are other free programs which would do the same as well. The .nrg file name relates to Nero which is what I use anyway.

What's the exact link for the software you used that was successful?

Perfect, cheers.

Just trying to get Nero downloaded and installed here!

When I download the link from the megaupload site, Im left with a file that I extract winrar. However the file/folder that is prodcued also has a winrar icon. Is this the actual one that needs burnt with Nero, or do I need to extract it again and then select all the files/folders that are within and burn them?!

Again, I know this is basics to most folk so I apologise.

I've replied to your PM but yes sometimes the iso files show up with a winrar icon if you have that on your computer so you should be good to go with that in Nero.

Well, after a weekend of stress my columbus is working again and I now have a fully functioning MFSW. Particular thanks to vRStu, colsand and Mikeholroyd for their advice and patience!
