Monster caravanette

Featured Replies

Was getting petrol in Perth last week and saw this massive off roading truck-thing. I thought it was something like an Ural truck but it was decked out like a camper-van. It had a spare wheel on the back (about 5 foot tall) and a full sized motorbike waaay up high. the door was open and peeking in it looked like a caravan.

there was a website on the side - http://www.ff-expedition.de/

The site has lots of pictures of the machine but it's all in German. I'm just curious as to what it was. It was such an odd thing to see in a Tesco car park.

That's not Perth btw. I know Tesco's car parks are normally pretty bad, but not that bad.

Big clue in the grille badge; it's a MAN! ;) I can't remember the exact model designation, but a military spec 4x4 truck.

Some of the stuff suggests an 8:136, but there's precious little about the base vehicle; it's mostly about how they built the sleeper body, and what they're doing.

and what they're doing.

what what tell me...! ;)

It just seemed a bit hardcore for caravanning in Pitlochry.

Mind you trees are going down like dominoes right now so maybe it's not so silly.

My German's not that good. I could follow some of the stuff about the bodybuilding, but not the mission plan.

That's the vehicle the SAS take when they go on holiday :giggle:

MAN ERF apparently won the last big truck procurement.

Obviously,as the photos show, not being articulated, it has its limitations when going off road - stucky between short interval dunes.

Looks like you could definately get a leather sofa in the back. Was the accomodation section de-mountable ?

Nick

They are pretty common in desert driving, see a fair number in Algeria/Libya out in the proper sands.

Usually as this one is they are made by MAN but you do see some Mercedes trucks and a Russia company whos name escapes me makes vehicles like this but they aren't too common since you can't get parts for them in Africa or the Americas easily.

It looked pretty comfy in the back. No idea if it came off or not.

It took up about 6 spaces in the car park.

For what value of "demountable"? The body is separate from but bolted to the chassis, but it's not a "drop the landing legs" or something you could lift off with an ISO container crane type job.

Kamaz springs to mind as the Russian firm, or the Czeck Tatra company (who use backbone chassis and all-round independant suspension [which can cope with the Atacama Desert but not South Yorkshire ;) ]).
