Starting / cutting out Problems

Featured Replies

Hello all, i have a problem that i hope someone can help me with.

My car is a '56 plate Fabia, 1.9 tdi. (108,000mls), most of my milage is done on the Motorway.

It has always started on the first turn of the key without fail. receintly though for no apparent reason it takes about 2-4 seconds before grudgingly starting.

The timing belt renewal was overdue when the fault started, but has since been changed. Still the fault is there !!!

I have also borrowed a friends "Sealey VS864" code reader, this keeps on showing code 16725-128, Camshaft position Sensor(G40), Implausible Signal (p0341).

I've changed the sensor & still the problem persists, i have now put the original one back, but retained the bought one as well.

Since the original starting problem, on 3 separate occasions whilst on the motorway i have had to pull over to the hard shoulder, as the engine has cut out, twice over the last 3 days.

After a short while the engine starts (grudgingly) & runs ok again, with NO lack of performance.

Can anyone shed any light on my nagging problem, or offer any guidance where to start checking to hopefully rectify the fault, please.

Many thanks.

Snowy.

Hello and Welcome to Briskoda

Check your turbo. It could have failed.

If when it wont start, take the out pipe off the turbo and see if the car then starts.

My guess would be relay 109 (ECU power relay).

Hi and welcome aboard.

These problems are only on start up, & with the odd occasion (missing/cut out) when cruising on the motorway.

When the car is running there are no performance issues at all, the car is responsive as always, & there is no lack of power from the turbo.

I hope this info could help you, help me in finding the fault.

Many thanks for your reply.

welcome,

most of the strange faults i have had on my skoda's (w reg octavia 1.9tdi 236k miles in 7 years and my roomster 07 145k miles still going ) have been due to either wear of cable insulation of the affected sensor or broken wires due to the vibration of the engine

follow the wiring looms look at the plugs and where the cable is supported in detail

worth a look, had a needle lift sensor on the octavia short after wearing through, the loom to the flap valve on my roomster wear through / short and several other things along those lines

Many thanks for the helpful reply, but the Camshaft Sensor i replaced with a new one & still the fault occured.

A friend had a same problem but on a BMW (5 series). Showing the camshaft sensor as the problem, but after several readings with the code reader it eventually read that the CRANKSHAFT sensor was at fault. He has now changed the sensor & all is well.

I'm wondering if i am going down the same road as him ?

I will check the looms on the sensors as precaution, once again, many thanks for the help.

Hopefully this may be the answer.

Following with interest. My parents 1.9TDI (ATD engine) has had trouble starting for a long time and we still don't know why. It takes a few seconds of turning over to start - not like mine which starts on the key. It's never cut out though.

Hmm. Also keeping an eye on this thread. By 55 plate 1.2 Fabia's engine cut out for a second or two when on an A road... I took it to the garage and they too diagnosed a camshaft sensor fault. It was replaced, however the engine had another minor cut out - only a second or so again - shortly after. My Fabia is off to the garage to get a few bits replaced (thanks less-than-careful Tesco customer) so I'll mention it to the mechanic and see what happens.

It can be your self starter motors problem .please go thru my experience.

Dear friends, I had discussed about my 2008 model octavia 2, 1.9 , diesel ,manual transmission cars starting problem. many have adviced in different aspects. But none solved my problem. I contacted Skoda local dealer and they told, battery has to be renewed.but since i know my battery is perfectly alright, I did not agreed to it.Then they told some of the sensors can be faulty like crank shaft position and speed sensors. But i was confident that it cannot happen to a well built car like skoda. Then on further investigation they told my dual mass flywheel to be replaced and it may cost nearly 2500 USD(In India)together with clutch overhaul.Since I am a Marine engineer I was knowing engines better than those peoples. while examining the problem myself i found when starting fails(as I described in my previous heading-engine vigorously vibrates and trips ,it happens not in all startings, may be in 1 out of 10 starts)the engine tachometer is showing only 500 rpm and while starting it is supposed to show nearly 1000 rpm.So I opened up the starter motor in a local electrical workshop and found that starter motor brushes are burnt slighty and some times in some positions the two sets of brushes are not making contact and motor not develops enough rpm for starting.I bought a new set of brush from local bosch dealer and got the problem solved.
