Forman/Favorit engine swap

Featured Replies

I currently own a 1995 Forman and I was looking to swap the 1.3 carb engine with a new more powerful engine , while searching around I found out that the Felicia used to have a 1.6 L 8v AEE engine and I think its a good engine since its found in a lot great cars like Golf MK3 ,Polo ,Octavia and some SEAT cars.

Any way , my question here is , what adjustments that I will need to do so I can fit this motor instead the one I already have ?

You'd need the wiring loom for the engine bay (which would need to be adapted to suit the Fav), the adapter plate (which bolts onto the gearbox), exhaust manifold and downpipe (some adjustment needed there) radiator, etc. If I recall correctly there are some differences in the wiring between the 1.6 engine and the 1.3 (something about the oil pressure switch springs to mind, Teflon Tom will be your man here). Plus you will need the tank (if that fits the forman) and high pressure feed/return, OR to adapt your current tank to provide high pressure fuel (injection runs at much higher pressure than the carb engine, and uses a pump in the tank).

And that's all if it's a Felicia. With a Fav changeover you will have to deal with the mounting being different - the Fav (IIRC) uses a stay on the back of the engine to stop the lot moving about, whereas the Fel does that on the gearbox, so you'd either need to fit a non-RB Felicia subframe and gearbox mounting, OR make the mounting up to suit the engine - whether this is possible I have no idea as it's been ages since I've had a Fav, although I tried it when I wanted to fit a 1.4 Fabia 8v engine to mine, and I got as far as modding the sump to allow this mount to fit, but on the 1.4 the bolt holes for the mounting are still present; I doubt they would be on the 1.6 as the engine is totally different.

All this is off the top of my head, though, so I'm prepared to be corrected on all of it! I don't think it'll be a straight swap in a Fav though, a Fel would be easier because of mounting issues.

does the favorit have the same twin multiplug connection to the dash loom that the felicia has?? darren?

there are a few minor differences in the wiring but nothing too much to worry about, the most diffucult thing being that the favorit doesn't have an immobilizer, so you will need to wire in the siemens immo box to the loom, but that's not too difficult.. make sure when you get your donor car that you get the immo box, ignition key and ecu from the same car..

I -think- that the later Favs have that sort of a wiring loom, but I wouldn't bet my shirt on it. Certainly the older ones had a right balls-up of a wiring loom!
