Loud noise from fan everytime it comes on!

Featured Replies

Everytime the fan comes on I get a loud whirling noise, then a hissing/wistle when it goes off. It seems loader first thing in the morning when I first start the car

Anybody had the same problem or any ideas whats going on?

Cheers

dodgy bearings I would guess.... or maybe it needs some grease up it.

Which fan? the heater or engine fan. If it's the engine fan that won't come on when the engine is started from cold so can't be that (unless the a/c is switched on). If it's the heater fan then could be leaves/debris gone down the grill into the plenum.

The louder noise when the car's cold could be the secondary air pump.

I was thinking engine fan, rather then cabin blower.... but I guess my initial reply could apply to either :-)

got a same problem sometimes.. but when i switch off the heater, its stop. SO something to do with it. Just dont know

where i should start to looking for that problem :S

Could be leaves (or some such) which have managed to get past a badly fitted pollen filter under the scuttle panel. If you drop out the glove box (5 torx screws & one light connector), then you can access the fan blower assembly...

Might be worn bushes in the fan blower motor.

Thanks for the replies. I thought it may be something to do with the engine fan as the noise is there when the heater fan is off. Will check out the secondary pump.

UPDATE

def not the engine fans, the noise is coming from under the engine left front, with air coming out. Is that where the secondary pump is located?

That would be the secondary air pump.

Does it sound like this?

Thanks!

Thats it! Not as high pitched but very simular. How did you fix it? Just got in replaced?

That's not my video, but that noise is caused by the secondary air pump.

It's a common thing. The rivets holding the pump together break and air leaks from it. You can either buy a new pump (expensive), or drill out the old rivets and replace them with nuts and bolts.
