AC Fan not working

Featured Replies

Hi everybody, my vRS was in the dealers to get a new radiator fitted the other week. I've just noticed since I've got it back that the AirCon fan doesn't seem to do anything when on setting 1 or 2 any more.

Turn it to 3 and it still makes the rather loud blowing noise it always did, but turn it back to 2 or 1 and the airflow's the same as the off position.

I'm assuming it's thinking 1 or 2 is 'off' as if you turn to 3 and put the AC on the AC light illuminates - turn it to 1 or 2 and after a second or so the AC light turns off. Recirc works on any setting and stays lit, however.

Anyone seen this before? Could it be something they knocked replacing the rad, or is it my usual bad luck of everything dying at once? I'm assuming it's something that is a big, complicated and expensive job to fix. That is my luck.

Sounds like the resistor has failed behind dash (common problem, loads on Briskoda about this)...

 Cheers! Now I know what I'm looking for a Search has been much more fruitful!

I'll get a new resistor pack and see if that sorts it.

Thanks again!

Thought I'd have a gander, so after removing the glovebox (and half my hand) I got to it: Looks fine (old) though, anyone know if you would see any visible signs of it failing?

You need to use a meter. Put one probe onto either of the outer connections and the other on the middle two. There will be no continuity.

the little silver cylinder between the two outer contacts is a thermal fuse, it blows to prevent the unit overheating

apparently on of the major causes of the resistor to fail is a blocked pollen filter reducing the air flow over the resistor which is how it is cooled, so if you have to replace the resistor have a look at the pollen filter at the same time
