I was thinking of buying this car, any tips?

The 4 cyl PD engine is a far better bet than the V6 in all respects - especially at today's fuel prices and at mileages where belt changes are needed. The purchaser would have to ensure that100 BHP met his needs, otherwise go for the 130.

Most important of all is to avoid the 2.0 PD which has a serious design fault (oil pump drive) which VAG will not honour.

The car in the advert is being sold by someone with no knowledge of these cars (rear wiper!) and would require a very careful examination - this is where the rubbish usually ends up. It's also too expensive.

Too expensive, that car is worth £2700 tops.

It's a base model car that is far too dear, they are hard to sell and almost impossible for that sort of money - unless you find an a buyer who doesn't know the market value they sell for.

They are better equipped than an Octavia (a base level Superb is roughly equivalent to a mid spec Octavia - apart from the lack of alloys). Check every Superb you look at for the dreaded water ingress that they all RHD cars suffer with (as well as the Passat B5/B5.5 it is based on) if it has ever leaked then walk away, unless you know for sure that it has 100% been fixed correctly, otherwise you with either have a dog of a car or something you will need to spend an awful lot of money on to repair.

Others have ignored this advise to their peril, they don't seem to stay active members for long - so maybe get rid pretty shortly afterwards??

I have a LHD Superb, so I will never have the water ingress issue? Is it only related to a RHD superb/passat?

thanks

I see a lot of LHD B5.5 Passats in the course of my work. I wouldn't say they never leak but it seems to be a lot less frequent - either that or Teutonic trees are more obedient and drop their leaves only when told to. The LHD B5.5 seems more likely to leak at the ECU box seal than at the plenum filter holder. They use the same crappy foam though...

As roto said ^^ there are not many reports of LHD cars leaking,

HOWEVER it is still a good idea IMO to remove the bungs in the plenum chamber just for a bit of added security.

So annoying when vw designed the oil pump for the 2.0 tdi engine and now they wash their hands of it...they should be held accountable for selling a car with a defective engine in the vehicle they know will fail, yet the laws that govern and supposedly protect the likes of buyers like me and others just arent there to help...they are all in it together i reckon.

but there are quite a few comments in American forums about leaks and failed brake servos in their LHD Passats...
