Running a mk1 Octavia vRS as a track day only car - what to know?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Been a serious while since I posted anything on here, but here goes.

I'm considering buying a more economical car for everyday use, but I might like to keep my current Octavia vRS mk1 solely for track use. How [im]practical might that be, financially?

Basically, I've owned a Jabba-remapped Octavia mk1 since 2003. She's not got 167k miles on the clock and a single mass clutch. I'm paying through the nose in fuel etc. (£250/mth), so I'm lining up a diesel-based replacement (either a newer mk2 PD170 vRS or, possibly, a Saab 9-3 TTiD 180bhp).

Having never done this trackday thing, and coming up on 40 this year (mid-life...), I've suddenly had the idea not to sell the Octy for a pittance, but instead to put her to good use during her dying days by putting her to pasture on the occasional track day.

I don't think I can afford to keep the two cars fully insured, so, any ideas on how I could do this?

Also, if I need to get the mk1 to a UK-based track day, how could I go about that (i.e. drive on temporary insurance, put her on a trailer etc.)?

Cheers

Rich

Track cars can be an expensive business mainly due to tyres and brakes which will need to be changed regularly, you might be better off investing on a smaller car to start with?

U should do it now because if u dont u prob will never do in

had identical idea some time ago, but thanks to relocation, fuel costs went down a bit :)

i was thinking just getting myself a trailer (£200-400?) and SORN'ing vRS. should be the cheapest/easiest way, however not too sure on trailing law (need special license? towing car spec?)

Slightly at a tangent, I owned a Mk2 PD170 vRS for a year, Bluefin'd. I didn't find it that economical.

Overall average never bettered 43 mpg.

Perhaps a 1.9 PD based VAG car (ie Fabia vRS, Leon FR 150) would be a better bet for economy as the general consensus seems to be they will do 50 + mpg easily.

Just a thought...
