100mph in 3rd

Featured Replies

thought i would try this 2day as i kinnda wonderd after a few people were saying about this a while back and can honestly say very easy to get 100+ in 3rd in a standerd vrs!

Not real speed apparently unless your limiter has been moved. Put it is a pointless excersize as the car peaks at 5500 rpm so anything beyond 5800 is a waste of time as the power drops off dramatically.

My lowly TDI touches 80 in 3rd. But its not really the speed I like, its the fact its still pulling up to over 4500rpm.

leon4112 i get what you mean.... niddle indicates im doing 100 in 3rd thats enough for me..nevermind weather or not im 'actually doing 100mph' i change just before it entres the red and find it pulls all the way... LOVE IT !!

Mine runs out of puff around 80 in 3rd.

MGB would probably just about pull 65, 928 - haven't found out yet (145 so far...) ;)

My Volvo does 125 in 3rd though - does that count ?

Rekon so  wonder what my Chimaera does in 3rd

my ibiza would go 85mph in 2nd, 120mph in 3rd, 145mph in 4th, silly mph in 5th

now it squeaks 100mph in 3rd but has an extra gear

my octy vrs does 110mph in 3rd and 140mph in 4th...didnt try 5th but a trip to germany i think is needed!!

Where do you get these speeds?! At 225km/h (that's about 140mph) in 6th I have 5500rpm.

What rpm's do yo at those speeds?

i think sometimes the octy needs a 6th gear woudl be even better ecommomy on long runs seems revvy at 70-80mph

Don't think i would even try 140 mph in 4th!. Have had 105 in 3rd and changed to 5th at about 115, kept going to 150ish before backing off. :D

Well i have an vrs and i can do 115mph in 3rd and i have talking to other vrs drivers and they can do around the same speed so if you can only do 100mph there is something wrong

Surely at the revs needed for that you are coming down on the power band. On my dyno reading from jabba 5650 rpm was the was the tip of the power band. Anything else higher is just a waste of time. Correct me if i'm wrong ( i normally am) but thats just the way i understand it

:rofl: ................I thing you may find on here somewhere that 110MPH is the maximum in 3rd , something to do with gear ratio's apparently ..........

I tend to find that once you've hit 90-95 MPH in 3rd you start to struggle , and you are much better off changing into 4th .

Apparently the vRS peaks at 5500 revs , so if you are holding in gear for much after that ....................you're wasting your time ................unless of course you feel the need to claim exaggerated in gear speeds .................. ;)

Have got to 100 in 3rd but changed quickly as was aproaching a roundabout V Fast

even mine does 100mph in 3rd, and it isn't even a VRS

ha ha ha ha ha

i can do 110 but my speedo has been calaberated! so even though u say 115 u maybe only doing 110. i might be wrong though!

Autocar Road Test - 109 in 3rd @ 7000rpm.

i can do 110 but my speedo has been calaberated!
Where and how did you get your speedo calibrated?

portable sat nav gave me the same speed that was on my speedo, plus i was driving at a tonne while my mate was doing the same and we were the same nose=nose distance!

Mine will hit the rev limiter at around 6750rpm at an indicated 110mph in third and 140 in 4th. This is standard Octy vRS stuff. Who said that their's will not do 100 in 3rd? There's something wrong there! It is not true to simply say that once you are over the peak power revs, you are wasting your time. If you change to a higher gear at peak power, you have changed too soon. The engine has to cope with a a higher ratio, so the torque at the wheels is suddenly reduced. There is of course an optimum change point, but this will be dependent on the difference in the gear ratios and the shape of the torque curve, but this is always above the peak power rpm. The only exception here would be if the peak power coincided with the rev limter.
