gearbox/diff bearing has gone

Featured Replies

Just got a phone call from skoda saying the suspected wheel bearing noise is infact a gearbox or diff bearing thats gone. Bad times.

Been driving like it for a couple thousand miles now and only happens when the steering wheel turns right any bit past 12 o'clock.

I'm stuck about what to do, option 1 is to source a gearbox (any pd 130 6 speed will fit won't it) and get a garage to replace it.

Or keep driving on it and save up for a new car (ibiza 1.8t is appetizeing) and then take the fabias gearbox out myself and try and repair it, or fit a second hand gearbox and reassembled in my spare time.

One last thing, how much would a garage charge to change a box and is it true any pd130 box will got and its just the ratios that are different.

Many thanks

Stephen.

Recon exchange box about fitted about £600. New box fitted £1800 approx. Not sure about any PD130 box fitting, different ratios etc, and some minor changes to cable linkages over the years. As for DIY box rebuild forget it, unless you have an extensive range of bearing pullers and the skill.

Could be worse. you could be in my boat haha.

Get searching round scrappers or ebay

Cheers moggy, is that price for a new box a guess or have you had it done before. Just gone down to skoda to drop off some rear brakes for them to change. So I asked them for a quote of removing/refitting a gearbox and a price for a new gearbox, going to take a day or so for the prices though.

Sy - what's up with your car?

I got a 2nd hand box from here for £400

The newer ratio is the HDS coded box

But its no odds really!

Any fabia vrs box will fit!

Pd130 6 speeds off golfs etc may also fit...

Older box will get you better mpg anyways :)

I paid about £75 to get mine changed and new clutch + flywheel in

But id say a normal garage may be rather expensive

I'll have a box available soon - £275, which is what I paid for its equivalent. Just not sure when it will be available though. Will have been opened up, inspected, and a diff freshly installed.
