Morning starting problems 1.9 tdi

Featured Replies

Hi new to the forums, sorry if this repetition but can't find a similar fault;

Car struggles to start when left overnight I need to put my on the accelerator to get it going. Once up and running I have no issues it pulls fine in all gears, there's no smoke on start up and after that there is no problem with it starting up for the rest of the day. Really pleased with the car apart from this had it a week now, seems a great forum any suggestions would be brilliant

Which TDI is it 90, 110 or 130BHP?

With the non-pd engines, if the fuel pump timing is not set correctly following a cam belt change they can be difficult to start.

Cam timing on the pd engines can also affect starting.

it's the 110 bhp, I was going to change the oil and air filters as a precaution this weekend as I didn't get much paperwork with the car - is it worth a trip to the garage to get the fuel timing looked at before I do this ?

Hi

Welcome to the forum. I see that you are in Derby. I can recommend a very good Octavia man in Nottingham who will sort your car out. He is really good and definately knows his stuff and can easily set the timing on the TDI. Let me know if you want his details.

Dan

Fuel pump timing can be checked with VAGcom if you know anyone close to you with it.

If you don't know when the cam belt was last changed, assume that it hasn't been and get it done ASAP. The recommended intervals are 4 years or 60k miles whichever is soonest.

Makes a mess if it snaps!

As well as above points, they don't start well on a poor/low battery, and mysterious overnight current drain problems aren't unknown, and the antishudder valve can get sticky. Wouldn't have thought glowplugs would be an issue this time of year though.

I agree about the glowplugs as my experience is that if anything is wrong with a glowplug or its supply circuit then you will get white smoke out of the exhaust.

You mean like how they're not energised if the outside temp is above 5C, so most Octys will puff a little white smoke on a stone cold start between 5 and 10C. As long as the starter gives you 260rpm, it'll fire quick enough though.
