Installing a towbar

Featured Replies

Following much research I managed to install a twobar and electrics on to my Skoda Octavia II estate 4*4, reg September 05.

It needed a bypass relay scotchlocked on to the wirest to lights. I drew the power supply for the bypass relay from the cigarette lighter socket in the rear of the estate. This avoided having to dismantle the trim all the way back to the fuse box. You can only do the 7 pin socket this way, if you want to hook up the full 13 pin caravan kit then you'll have to go all the way back to the fuse box.

You can't simply scotch-lock the lights without the by-pass relay as the sensors would detect them and the car would explode, or something.

I hope this helps someone else.

Thanks for the notes; I'm about to do the same with my Mk1 03 estate ...

One thing you said puzzles me (although this may be a difference between the mk1 & mk2 Octy). You said you would have to make the full trip back to the fuse box for the 31-way (or the older 7S) caravan socket, but I don't understand why?

From my research the lighter socket in the back is always-on & fused at 30 amps which is more than the caravan power/fridge extensions call for. Have I missed something here?

Regards, Mike
