front suspension rattle/knock

Featured Replies

when passing over grids, pothholes etc my front suspension gives a sound/feeling of something like worn bush rattling, i have checked wishbones with a pry bar & nothing appears worn or loose, mileage is 120,000, any ideas to cause? thanks in advance

Anti-roll bar bushes maybe . There known for it .

I sympathise with you! Mine still does this after changing drop links and anti-roll bar buses?? Does it when cornering hard too on the inside wheel of the corner...almost feels like track rod ends or tracking arm but everything is solid??? I have done the top mounts and bearings too!

Also the lower rad mounts can cause a noise when worn.

Worth checking the centre exhaust mount too

Thanks for replies, its definatley suspension problem as you can feel it through steering wheel, it was mot tested a couple of weeks ago & while it was up on ramps both tester & myself had a good push/pull/lever, everything was tight so no problem with test, just seems a complete mystery

I had a knocking when cornering, turned out to be the top mount bearing in the Mcpherson strut, had both replaced - haven't had any trouble or knocking since

I have the same problem passenger side front everythings tight too... damn annoying

I too have the same problem.

Passed the NCT (Irish MOT) a few weeks ago, no problems there.

Recently had a tt rack and rear wishbone bushes fitted and nothing else needed replacing.

A friend suggests a bush in the subframe? This make sense??

Could be the steering coloum

I have spent years trying to find out the cause of something similar and the last thing is the coloum or maybe the subframe bush

Mines been like it for 4 years plus emoticon-0106-crying.gif

It`s funny this topic has come up as mine has just started doing this aswell. It drives me mad and it sends a knock through the steering wheel aswell which on rough roads is really bad. Plus i`ve just noticed that the front tyres need a change again already after only 6000 miles. The last Pirelli P6000`s lasted nearly 25000 miles. I`m guessing either somethings worn or the state of Britains roads has thrown the tracking well out :(

Hi, had the same rattle you described and traced it to worn sliders on the brake caliper. Fitted new sliders and pins and the rattle went.

To test this, see if the rattle disapears under braking. (As the freeplay is taken up when caliper grips the disc)

Hope this is of use to you.
