Another case of coolant loss....

Featured Replies

I have had a look in here and there appears to be many many threads about Fabia's losing coolant.

It seems the cause can vary from HG problems, to expansion bottle issues, water pump impellor failure, split hoses, etc, etc.

I am hoping mine is not HG related.

I bought my Fab in April, and since then have had the low coolant warning beep most days when starting. The level is just around the minimum so I thought it was probably a duff expansion tank.

When I bought some bits for it last week, I also got some G12++ so stuck some in the tank to bring it up to max last Wed.

Today the low coolant beep happened again, and low and behold the level is now back down at minimum.

So in around 200 miles, it has lost max > min, but bizarrely seems to stay steady when down at min.

I have also noticed a pool of coolant under the car since I topped it up - today I removed the sump tray and found a drip coming from around the centre of the car, below the radiator area - it is dripping onto the bumper lip and running off that onto the ground.

Any ideas what could be the cause from this area?

I will get my mechanic mate to have a look - looks like you need to strip some bits off to get to the rad - is it pretty straightforward?

Cheers guys,

Steven

I put some dye in to find my coolant leak with ease. Was the heater matrix pipes

Yeah sounds like a leaky rad! Not uncommon

Pretty sure to get the rad out you'll have to remove bumper

It also has the air con rad connected too it so you may need an aircon regas...

Shouldnt be too hard to fit :)

Leaking thermo switch where it screws into the rad.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'd rather it was leaky rad than HGF which I first feared!

Aircon not working anyway so nothing lost there!

Any advice on the best place to source a new rad?

Thanks again,

Steven

Sorry Moggy, was typing as you replied.

Whereabouts is the thermo switch located? I'll check that first - start with the simpler job...

Thanks guys.

Standing at front of car right hand side of rad half way down. Make sure engine is cold or disconnect battery in case the cooling fans kick in.

This is a known problem....had same with mine.....the washer/o-ring fails......either get a new one or use appropriate sealant!!!...and it is a bugger to get to....slightly better from below!!! B)

my mechanic had a look at it last night and it looks like a new radiator is required.

Leaking from the core, both sides.

Nothing drastic - going from Max to Min in around 500 miles so going to wait until I have been on holiday in York before getting it replaced (can't chance taking it to bits and something going wrong preventing me from taking car on holiday!).

I'll just carry a supply of G12++ with me :D

Best place to order replacement rad? - ECP?

Cheers,

Steven

Replacing the Rad NOW is a quicker and cheaper way than having to replace the head gasket and maybe a re-skim.

Don't delay.
