Running in a Diesel advice

Featured Replies

Can anyone offer a little knowledge on something i'm sure has been banded around the forum a few times.

I noticed in the handbook it suggests not going past 3/4 of the rev limit for each gear for the first 1000KM. What is the limit for each gear, I cant this info in the manual ?

Also I haven't given it beans until the oli has been around 90 oC. When I was at the dealers a customer reccomended getting the oil changed after the first 500 miles to clear out the odds & sods worn off in the engine during running it in, is this advisable ?

Can anyone help with the above or have any pearls of wisdom they wish to share.

Your comments are appreciated to help me make sure the little fella is ran in right.

Governor on a car diesel typically "stops play" somewhere between 4500 and and 5000rpm. 3/4 of this would suggest using 3250 to 3300 depending on rev counter calibrations.

I've heard the oil change thing before (including from senior Police mechanics) but I've not seen it in a manufacturer's official recommendations since the 1980s.

Just give it beans once it is up to temp on the oil (75C plus) and take it through the rev range through as many gears as possible. The prevents the piston rings from bedding in in just one place and creates a better seal. Mine has used 0.5litres of oil in nearly 16k.

I haven't changed the oil in mine and is due at around 18.5k.

75 onwards is ok then ? I thought it had to be 90 ish. Mind you if you haven't had any problems then 75 sounds like a good plan. Thanks for the advise

Ok i'll try to stay around 3500 until 1000km & then increase the range, traffic permitting ! I'm sure i'll find somewhere to stretch its legs. :p

We left the dealers with our new car,& 5 to 10 miles later were on the Motorway at 80 odd for a soild Hour.

Currently at about 11,500 miles.

Zero oil consumption.

I will let you know in another 238,500 miles of the validty of this approach.

Hopefully not sooner.

With all the CNC and robotic assembly nowadays, running in as it used to be done is not necessary. As jrw said give it some welly but don't let it stuggle, a few extra revs is better than lugging it. And anyway, 3000rpm is not exactly hanging about is it?

An extra oil change will not do any harm (unless the mech strips the thread!)

That's more or less what I did on my first octavia. Was still loosening up at 20,000 miles and was still pulling like a train at 200,000, and still felt very relaxed delivering a 60+mph average over 600 miles.

come on dieseldogg don't forget the old Italian tune up!

ps out of interest did you get your car outside of NI?

Yep & Nope

Yes to most of the above, once warm it is much better for the engine to work it hard regularly to help bedding in the piston rings etc. Use the revs rather than letting the car labour at too low revs and high gear and don't hold the same revs for a long time. There is no real need to change the oil after 500 miles nowadays with modern manufacturing techniques, that was from the old days where tolerances were not as tight and there would usually be some swarf from the manufacturing left in the engine, if you want to change the oil however then it will do no harm at all.

lol thats ok was just wondering how you managed to find a motorway in NI that was possible to drive for an hour at 80mph constantly since the longest stretch of motorway we have is only 38 miles long so was assuming you got a better deal across the water like I did

As already said.......

You dont need to run it in at all!!! :giggle:
