Rear ended!

Featured Replies

Just pulling away from a motorway access roundabout, when BANG.

"Sorry mate I wasn't looking".

Only about 5 mph,but what a bang.

Obvious damage.......The grey bumber is punched through to the left of the exhaust pipes.A long scratch in the plastic, and the silver bit under the bumber slightly dislodged.

Otherwise unmarked bodywork.

In the hands of "His" insurers now so we'll see what tomorrow brings......

Would it be wise to use reputable Skoda dealers for the work?( Hortons of Lincoln & Roberts in Hull are my nearest.)

By coincidence,PC plod was in his Proton Panda car,4 cars back , so I have the ultimate witness.

" I see 3 or 4 of these a day" he said, and otherwise wasn't at all interested.(though he did check we were both insured on his computer.)

OOOOH nasty Ian :(. Often you will find insurance companies have their own ' recommended repairers' and they will restore your pride & joy back to his or her original condition.

But I think we SHOULD have a say in who repairs our cars, to some extent anyway.

There is also a possibility of a 'mate' bumping up the costs so you can have £500 each, that can't be allowed to happen as it's unfair and fraudulent.

It's not well known that you do not have to use the 'recommended repairers' suggested by an insurance company. The insurers would prefer you to use these people because they are cheap, but EU and UK competition laws mean that the insurance companies cannot demand that you use them. You have a right to choose a repairer and the insurance company have to pay. They might insist that you get a couple of quotes and go with the cheapest of these, but again you, not they, choose who to approach for those quotes. If you look at the 'small print' they have ways of 'persuading' you to go with their recommendation; e.g. many insurance companies will only pay for a 'courtesy car' if you use their repairers (but you may find that, for example, a Skoda dealer will provide this facility themselves).

We're insured through Adrian Flux and they seem to be dealing very competently with it all.

So I think we'll go ahead with their plans.

When I said "His" insurers,it's because we were told by Adrian Flux that we were totally at no fault .They would do it all through the rear enders Insurers (Zurich).

I was initially a little concerned about which repairer would be used, because of the rarity of The Yeti, especially up in these parts.

However I now realise It's a "Golf/Audi/Seat"(VAG) underneath it's little Yeti skin.

We've been told we'll be loaned a like-for-like vehicle while it's being repaired.

I can't wait to see what they consider equal to a 170 TDI Elegance 4x4.....Freelander perhaps?:smirk:

I've just renewed my car insurance and have saved £90.00 odd by going to Direct Line, and YES they know we have a Yeti and WILL insure Ivor

The springer would eat it!:D

Ian - sorry to read about your accident and hopefully your Yeti will be quickly fixed without too much further hassle.

Following a similar incident to my wife's Yaris I asked in a post last week 'How robust are the Yeti bumpers?' - from what you describe it would appear they are no better, or worse, than any other car these days. That post has some really helpful replies including details of cameras that can be fitted to film any accident.

The bumper of the Yaris just got a few scratches and is slightly loose, but the claims assesor decided to replace it rather than try to repair it. If a similar thing is decided for your Yeti, hopefully it doesn't matter too much who does the repair since a replacement Yeti bumper presumably wouldn't need any matching of paint colour.

Calum

That's why I have a fixed tow bar !!

UPB came and checked out the damage today.

Basically a well bashed rear bumper, and anything they find underneath when they dismantle it.

They'll flatbed the Yeti away, take about a week to repair it(Yes a whole week?)

In the meantime we get an equivalent Hire car delivered to our door whilst all the above takes place.Whats the betting it's a Cashcow.:wonder:

That's why I have a fixed tow bar !!

This can make things worse in any collision - instead of a new bumper needed, the towbar, connected directly to the chassis, can act as a leaver, and bend the chassis out of shape easily...

Al.

Stops the "rebound" parkers though.

O.K. Harveys back now ,with shiney new rear bumper.

It,s taken nearly 2 weeks , with no problems, except the vast amount of paper work involved.

Brokers,handling companies,hire companies,satisfaction surveys,etc.

I now have a whole folder full!

We were loaned a Honda CRV 2.2 diesel for the best part of a week ,which made an interesting comparison to the Yeti 170 tdi.

A good looking car from a distance, but up close, lots of lumps and bumps with chrome bling.

It was surprisingly much larger than the Yeti, and harder to maneuvre as it also had a larger turning circle.

Inside it seemed more plastic and not as well screwed together.

The seats were hard and flat, front and back, and uncomfortable on even short journeys.

The ride and road noise were better than the Yeti, but the handling was not as crisp.

Lots of body roll in corners too.SWMBO was not impressed.

The steering felt a little artificial and the brakes seemed very spongy compared to the Yeti's crisp brakes.

The Honda's forte is the engine. What a peach of a diesel.

Almost silent(You really wouldn't know it was a diesel.) very smooth and flexible.

It would happily potter around in 6th gear when the Yeti would need 5th or even 4th.

The gearchange,however,was very clunky.

I averaged about 37mpg compared to around 40 in The Yeti.

Overall it reminded me of an American softroader.

I was very glad when Harvey came home....

Glad you got your Yeti sorted.

Interesting comparison between these 2 SUV type cars. The CRV does have a fair bit more torque than even the 170 TDi. But like you say, a bigger heavier car than the Yeti. Out of all the Asian crossovers, I think the Mazda CX-7 is the better looking of the bunch.

The Saga continues........

Went out to the car this morning and one of the reversing sensors has fallen inside the rear bumper,so I now have a continuous warning when reversing.

On closer inspection 2 of the others don't seem too secure.

I'm sure they were before. They survived several power washes and a 5mph rear impact without budging .

Will phone the repairers monday morning and see whats to do...:@ (feel better for that. )

Nice man from upb came in his van this morning.

He removed the bumper, reglued all 4 parking sender holders with his £60 a tube super duper glue, and all is now O.K.

He showed me the plastic holder that had fallen off inside the bumper. It was stuck by nothing more effective than what looked like double sided Sellotape.

Apparently thats how they leave the factory.

The Insurers wont let the repairers do a more permanent repair apparently,so upb had to send out a worker ,in a van, for half a day.

Crazy.

You didn't happen to see what the goo was, did you? One of mine got knocked out whilst on holiday and I need to put it back.

Sorry no.

It was in one of those cardboard tubelike dispensers.

looked like black toothepaste .

He just said it cost the repairers £60 .I guess that's why the insurance people wont pay ....:wonder:

I suspect it was 'Tiger Seal' ?
