white smog when start engine

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have small problem when start engine. I does not start very smooth (1-2 seconds), but when I press accelerator it goes very good with some white smog cloud. Its happening only in the morning, after that engine works perfect.

I have got 2.0 tdi 140BHP. Could anyone help please?

thanks

chris

Sounds like condensation coming out of the exhaust system before it has a chance to heat up. Once its hot the water vapour still ejects but as invisible steam. Only happens on acceleration because at low power all the vapour will have condensed onto the interior of the exhaust system.

What year is the car? Does it use any coolant?

If its starting rough too it could perhaps be the porous cylinder head problem that some early BKD engines suffered from.

this is 2007

A 2007 cylinder head should be ok, they were onto the second modified version by then.

Mine used to be a slow starter when I first got it and an engine software update cured the problem. Mine never actually used to smoke/steam though, just took ages cranking before it would fire.

Does the cloud smell of oil / diesel ??

I had a Mk 1 Diesel & it started lumpy & puffed a cloud of Diesel smoke when starting, It was traced to the hydraulic tappets not pressurising as the car started & was put down to a tired oil pump. I sold the car over a year ago to a mate & its still running exactly the same & hasnt got any worse.

Could be a failed glow-plug (or 2). Rough start-up caused by only runnning on 3 cylinders while the unburnt diesel from No4 gets thrown out the exhaust. After a few seconds the missing cylinder will start to fire so smooth running and no more white smoke.

#7 is close, but most current VAG engines don't energize the glowplugs above 5C ambiant temperature, so it's unlikely to be a failed glowplug.

If the smoke is only on a dead cold start, and goes away after 2 or 3 seconds (accompanied by the engine going onto all cylinders if it was running rough), lots of them do it for years with no real issues.
