First post here so be gentle!

So, picked up our Vrs on Friday, Black, 60 plate with 3000 miles, sat nav, xenons and parking sensors. Drven about 150 miles in it and I'm completely amazed!

The space, the refinement, the flexibility of the engine, can be very economical when required (averaged 44mpg over a 25 mile trip yesterday) the performance, the quality, fantastic!

Had an Accord Type R for 4 years which became too expensive to run so then took a sensible pill and got an 03 plate Passat 130 Tdi. Despite my best efforts to like it I just couldn't get on with diesel. The rattle, the all or nothing power delivery, the inability to rev. Having said that I'm sure the new CR technology has improved things massively but unless things change and I have to start doing huge miles I won't own a diesel again, the leap forward in petrol engine technology is quite huge.

Only slight worry is going to be keeping the black paint in good condition, looks fantastic when clean but it's already filthy.

I'm already researching the possibilities of a remap as well, 250bhp is very tempting!

Welcome to Briskoda. Glad your enjoying the car.

CR isn't new technology, it was about long before the VW pumpe duse technology.

I can recommend REVO for your remap.

Welcome and congrats on the new car :)

Glad your enjoying the car, I too went from a (tuned) diesel vectra (200bhp) to a 60 plate 2.0 TSI and couldnt believe how good the engine was. I dont think i'll ever go back to the black stuff again.

The only thing I miss is the torque, and the TSI has plenty for a petrol engine.

I'm getting the car Sharked this month (group buy just closed) - stage 1 tune to 260ish bhp, and more importantly torque goes up to about 280lb.

Cant wait cos the car is going to be awesome :)

Suggest you have a look at the tuning threads, Shark comes highly recommended

Cheers guys.

Probably been asked many times before but what are the consequences of the remap on the warranty? Assume it invalidates certain parts of it?

I've seen Shark do the self tuning system allowing swapping of maps. If the ECU is remapped and then switched back to the standard map is there any evidence left on the ECU to show that it's been remapped?

Thanks 999, I'll have a look.

Welcome to Briskoda, loads of good advice to be had!

I'm guessing this was from the onboard computer (OBC), just be aware that they can be a little over optimistic.

It's more likely you'll be getting mid to late 30's...

Enjoy! Any pictures to make us all jealous!?

Skoda say it doesnt invalidate the warranty per se. but if the fault is a direct consequence of the map they wont touch it.

Not heard of anyone being turned away due to their car being remapped as yet. Although someone may know different.

As far as detection, if they look they will find! the checksum value gets incremented. However not sure many dealers look that hard

Yeah, from the computer, assumed there'd be a slight innacuracy, be interesting to see how the figures stack up on the next fill.

No pictures yet 'cos it's filthy. Planning a big wash, polish and wax tomorrow evening!

Depends how you look at it really, unit injection systems (like the PD) were developed in about 1910, common rail was developed in the 1960's but neither found their way into production cars until the late 90's.

Glad you like it. I recently got a new vRS estate with the TSI and I am also amazed at the refinement! Sooo much nicer than my diesel. Goes OK as well ;-)

I keep on thinking about a remap, but warranty, insurance and no desire to jump to Super Unleaded put me off.

Enjoy!

Richard

PS The only fly in the ointment is the Fiscon phone unit (Seeking advice in ICE forum).

Go on get it done :giggle:

super unleaded - remap can be tweaked for std 95Ron

warranty - car still remains under warranty (in the main)

insurance - quotes are not that unreasonable, 10-20% increase is norm. Remember youve already made a killing by buying the best value car on the market!

go on, you know you want too....... :giggle:

Nice move Paul, how do you compare the Accord and the Octavia, whilst it's still fresh in your mind?

Pooch, please let me know your thoughts after the remap.

Will do, I'm getting really excited about it now, getting the STS as part of a group buy arranged here on Briskoda. So have to wait a few weeks before it arrives, hopefully before end of June. Saved about £200 so worth the wait!

which engine have you got silverback?

Ha just seen you've got the TSI!!

using Iphone to reply so don't always see the full thread.

Good choice though, and the most receptive for tuning, apparantly!

Very very different. I loved the Accord but it was very full on. Revved to nearly 8k rpm and sounded brilliant but would be doing over 4k rpm at 80 on the motorway so long journeys were a little tiresome. Economy wise I found it almost impossible to get near 30mpg, probably because it loved to rev and that was usually how I drove it! Handling was brilliant, very throttle adjustable and with the limited slip diff traction was superb.

It's still early days with the octavia though I would say outright performance feels very similar but with the vRS it is far easier to access and the flexibility and torque of the engine are simply in a different league. The refinement is much better too (perhaps not a fair comparison as the accord was 10 years old). Handling wise, I've not really pushed it round any corners yet, weather's been terrible and still getting to know it, but it certainly feels 'right'. In short, the type r was good at going quickly but if you weren't in the mood it could become tiresome, the vRS appears to be very accomplished however you're feeling.

Different cars from different times and maybe it's just because I'm growing up but as a complete package the Octavia wins hands down. If you hadn't guessed by now I'm quite impressed with it!

Welcome. Seeing your general location...you weren't by any chance driving in Yeovil this pm were you? Passed a Black vRS and every time I see one now I wonder whether it's a fellow member.

Cheers Red.

No, not me I'm afraid. I live in the Glastonbury area and am often in Yeovil so will look out for you!

OK. Pretty sure I've got the only Red vRS in the area. At some point in the near future I should have a Briskoda sticker too.

Sounds about right Paul, just interested to see how you compared the two. I've had an ATR myself, as well as an Integra and Civic Type-R, will always love Type-R Hondas and am thinking about a DC5. The Octavia is hands down the best car I have had, it can do everything.. with ease. It is so practical, so versatile and just great at being a car. Realistically you couldn't want for more, but I think after 2 years I just want something different. I know a remap would put the car in a different league in terms of performance but straight line grunt isn't everything and I always did love the mechanical feel of the ATR & Integra. That said they are older cars and as much as I didn't think I'd say it, I have got used to a more modern cabin, the smell of a dank Japanese interior just doesn't seem to fit any more. I'm also considering an E46 M3, which themselves feel a bit old hat.. my old 330 was pretty basic by comparison, I just think I miss the extra polish of the very best performance machines.

The Octavia sets the bar very high though, hence why I've kept it over 2 years when all before have lasted no more than 12 months, sporty Hondas included.
