Tesco Fuel

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried this rocket fuel 'Momentum99' from Tesco.

The spiel given out by Tesco seems too good to be true.

Sounds like a load of **** if you ask me!

Its garbage... In my experience about 10-20% worse mpg than shell vpower

lol :)

Stick with Shell and BP mate, I always avoid supermarket fuels. Infact, now I have my MK2 vRS I only use Shell V-Power :D

Some says.... that it all comes from the place, 99 ron have more additives which makes the fuel cleaner and better for the engines, I used momentum and V-power on my old car and couldn't feel the difference or see an improvement on mpg.

Anyone working in this industry that can explain the exact difference?

can't say I've noticed a difference between tesco momentum and shell v-power in terms of performance or economy in a 1.8t golf, think the shell cost more though

My reason for asking was I have a voucher for 5 pence off a litre of Momentum99, best left well alone I think.

considering the issues that Tesco has had in the past with its fuel i would never fill my car up at Tesco....or buy their "value" bread

+1

I like to buy things from original manufacturers....not a "branded" product.....like those stupid expensive watches by fashion brands......open them up and besides the cheap "bling" case they only have a £5 quartz movement!!

P.S. I know that some people will say that a Fabia is a rebagded VW polo....but Skoda has been making cars for over 90+ years...so they are still a car manufacturer!!!! B)

Used to drive a civic type s, noticed a 3-4mpg increase when i switched form supermarket sludge to tesco momentum and may have been a placebo but throttle seemes a little more responsive.

Now in my mk II Fab VRS i am only using tesco momentum and v-power, whichever i am closest too when i need fuel. I buy all my food shopping at tesco so its fairly handy at the weekends to top up, that coupled with double points for buying fuel with my tesco credit card makes it very appealing, and loads better with the 5p off a litre deals too.

In all my cars i have owned i have regularly ran some kind of additive through every few months such as redex/whinns to give it a flush out should there be any crap in the works.

Touch wood, not had any issues with fuel so far, however the mrs did with her clio 1.2 TCE and using morrisons fuel - I have now banned her from supermarket sludge and instead she fills up with shell fuel save.

Surely supermarket fuel is the same stuff you get at any major garage? It all comes from the same refinery. I certainly have no qualms about using Tesco, Asda etc to fuel up. Asda fuel here is currently 134.9p per litre. The BP 50 metres up the road is 141.9p per litre. It's a no brainer. I have noticed no difference in power or economy when using BP or Shell diesel compared to supermarket fuel and only very marginal differences when using V Power or BP Ultimate and certainly nothing worth spending an extra 8-9p per litre for.

Sainsburies fuel is BP fuel, they share the same tankers.......

Don't know about the rest.

I filled my new MK2 vRS up the other day with Shell V-Power - was 143.9 iirc. Worth the extra in my opinion seeing as the car had 6 miles on the clock it'll get the best from day one :D

All fuel comes from the "same refinery", eg all the tankers in your area all go to the same storage depot and fill up using the same base stock for that grade of fuel, then they add their own cleaning/detergent, additaves etc,.......but not for Shell V-Power....that comes from Shells own production plant as it is specially made!!! From a scientific perspective, the tests performed in their spiel are a bit weak IMHO.

There's nothing to stop you spending the extra couple of quid a tank a few tanks to compare MPG if you already track MPG. Remember if you have the 1.4 16v I believe it specifies a requirement for RON98 fuel minimum - I'm convinced owners filling up with the cheap RON95 stuff is what causes the majority of piston ring problems (as it detonates sooner causing pinking, or forcing the piston down before it has fully risen).

Once was behind someone filling up a Lamborghini Gallardo with RON95 unleaded when there was a Super Unleaded pump right next to it. Must have ran, comparatively with identical cars, like a bag of spanners. Spend that much on a car and try save a couple of quid on the fuel

Most manufacturers of 'brands' also produce for supermarkets, and in many cases the stuff that goes to the supermarkets 'own label' is at least equal in quality to the market leaders.

I worked as a technical manager in many factories over the years, and believe me supermarkets don't take carp anymore (unless its branded 'value' of course). They would quite often take your best product and tweak it to make it better (more expensive to make) but not pay any more for it (usually less). End result was the customer got a stonking good deal. Manufacturers put up with this because they shift volume.

In contrast, millions of £'s is spent on advertising by the brand leaders, and that's added directly to the cost of their goods.

The smart money buys own label these days.

Petrol is not much different, in fact they are governed by tight regulations as to what the composition is.

But it's a free market, and you buy whatever you think is best.

Sorry for rant, but I often hear lots of rubbish talked about 'own label' products, and having worked with them for so long I feel qualified to put my two pennies in.

I can confirm that the 1.4 16v Fabia engines do state 98ron as first choice to run properly...been using it for the past 7ish years now! B)

Tesco value bread is still crap though.........

agreed

I have been using Momementum 99 for the last year or so, switching from V Power.

I have had no problems, it pulls just as strong as V Power and it is cheaper.

I don't keep track of my MPG anymore as it just got upsetting (and it's gay) but I think I get more from the Momentum than I did with the V Power.

I've been using Esso's new energy fuel stuff not sure on the name of it but that makes a real difference!

based on?
