Can anyone recommend a really good brake dust remover?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Appreciate there are quite a few people into car detailing on here; I'm not so for obvious reasons now have a really quite bad brake dust build up on my Golf's alloys as to be honest it sometimes doesnt get washed for 2-3 months :-)

Can anyone recommend a really decent brake dust remover and perhaps repellant so I can get them nice and clean and protect them a bit better?

Not overly bothered as its a company car but dont really want the same thing happening to the vRS if I can help it :-)

Much appreciated

Paul

Bilberry wheel cleaner or Espuma Revolution

Meguair´s wheel brightner.

+1 on bilberry

I've been forced to use very watery diluted Faracla on occasion, which does the trick on the inside of the rims.

Both good products but expensive. Try to locate someone who will sell you some Viro-sol. It costs about £6-7 for 5ltrs and you dilute it about a third to two third water.

It's made by Clover Chemicals (try Google their suppliers) and it's very good but gentle ie non acidic. In reality the best way to keep your wheels looking good is to seal them with a barrier of cheap "manual" wax and clean them regularly (ie at least once every 1000 miles)

I have used wonder wheels (acidic) before with good results - but be cautious with any acidic cleaner as it pretty aggressive (hence why it is good) and if you use it on curbed parts where the paint is broken it won't do anything any favours.

On decent wheels I am impressed with the Autobrite Very Cherry (non acidic) wheel cleaner, I have only needed to use it diluted 10:1 but it can also be used neat on really stubborn brake dust.

I have been told to get the wheels superguarded then the brake dust washes off :)

Getting a superguard sponge at the weekend so will give it a go ;)

I would clean them properly, using a gentle non acidic cleaner. Then use a wheel sealant, I use Poorboys wheel sealant. It is about £12 for a tub. Once this is applied, the brake dust obviously still builds up on the wheels, but it literally just hoses off next time you clean the car.

Definitely recommend Wolf chemicals Decon Gel.
