Bike Racks (Hatch Mount)

Featured Replies

I wanna cart me MTB about, but not on the roof or in the boot (vRS, so mud + that horrid interior colour).

I've been looking at a Thule 9107 high mount thing.

Anyone got any words of wisdom? Does the vRS spoiler get in the way?

MPM,

I have the skoda roof bars and the thule ProRide 951 - see link:

http://www.thule.com/frames.asp?id=8590

It fits onto the roof easily and holds my bike in place ridigly (Specialized Enduro). The rear spoiler doesn't interfere at all.

I have always managed to keep the inside of the car clean after various muddy trips, and it is easy to secure the bike on the rack... very useful if it's cold/wet and you want to get in the car!

aha, right, done a bit of research....

...the 4 plastic cover things have 'stuff' ( :P ) under them that allows roof bars to be clipped (and unclipped) into place. Is that correct? As if it is....a roof system is my preference.

A Thule roof rail seems to come in at

I have recently got the Thule 9107 rack. My car's an Elegance but can't see the vRS being a problem with fitting.

I had the Skoda roof bars but found them a pain in the **** to fit, removing those 8 little blanks is fiddly and I broke most of them :(

I got my money back on the bars and bought the 9107.

I've yet to test the rack out on the road but it seems very solid. It's made of steel tubing so it's heavy ! typical Thule quality

Here's a pic of it:

Hope this is of help to you.

I too was going to take the roof bars and roof carrier route, but that looks lovely... Can you still open the hatch with bike loaded?

I take my bike to Switzerland every Summer, and usually need to get in the boot...

Do you mind me asking what it cost?

I recently got a high mount rack from Halfords cos i needed it urgently and cheap. It works ok but would have bought Thule by choice. Halfords

I was going to buy one of these recently, however when it is raining and my front windscreen wipers are on and i put the car in reverse, the rear smart windscreen wiper wipes once!!! then what happens with the rack covering the rear windscreen!!! Hmmmmm!!

I went for the roof mounted racks, easy to get the bikes on and off and allows you to use the boot without any obstruction or sit in the boot to take your mucky boots off etc after a ride. I'd suggest getting some seat covers from Halfrauds too, I keep mine in the side pockets in the boot, easy to put on the seats to stop you messing up the nice clean interior after a decent mountain bike ride in the typical british weather

Dont worry about Getting the interior dirty stick your bike in the boot use old curtains or sheets to line the boot. Sorted.

advantages of not using a rack.

if its raining/ wet on the roads you dont get water forced into your bearings/bottombracket hubs gears etc.

you dont have to stick to 75/80mph (or whatever speeds the rack manufactures suggest)

nothing for people to nick

disadvantages

cant carry passengers in the back

Does the wiper clear the rack if it is operated? Otherwise you could take the fuse out for the rear wiper when the rack is fitted!

To answer a few questions;

The rack cost me

Looking at that piccy, on the vRS surely those 2 top straps would be putting the weight of the bike(s) and rack ON the spoiler...

..argh, so many different things to consider...

I think i'm gonna have to find a local dealer of stuff and actually go see & try some stuff...

Um?? How about remembering to switch off the wipers before putting the car in reverse??? I did accidently knock the rear wiper switch when using my rack the other day and although the wiper moved up to the rack it didn't cause any damage and still works. Surely the rear wiper has a cut off if the arm is jammed for any reason??

Every time I see a bloody Fabia estate I wish I had considered my bike when choosing the car!!!!

The rear wiper fuse is No. 32 which is located in the fuse box. The box is located in the panel which becomes visible when you open the drivers door. It would be very quick to remove.

Sorry to change the subject a bit, but have you had any problems using your skoda roofbars?, damage to paint or plastic roof strips? . I have just bought a set but haven't got to use them yet. They look well designed, but I'm nervous about anything that gets close to the paintwork.

Just be careful when putting them in the mounting points. I usually drop the side in closest to me and then let the other side fall in to the other slots. I did scratch the car once when I got the bars the wrong way round (rear bar on front slots) as they are different lengths. However, now I've got the hang of it, I don't have any problems.

The blanks that cover the mounting slots are a bit crap, but if needed, you could pick up new ones from a scrappy or something...

I wouldnt hang a decent bike on the back of any car these days. OK, they may be made well, but having seen what happens to a bike when it flies off, I wouldnt want that to happen to mine.

I would only now consider the tow ball mounted rack system, such as the Pendle ball mounted 4 bike rack I have now. Rock solid, even when fully loaded and at speed.
