vRS aftermarket alloy questions :)

Featured Replies

I've been looking at getting some Matrix Torque alloys, and have managed to find a company which do a 5 stud fitment, as it's primarily a 4 stud alloy on most sites, I think they look neat and will work well with my Fabia once the Eibach's are on. They will also show up the discs & callipers better than my standard vRS alloys.

I do have a few questions however.

Firstly, whats the difference in weight between the Matrix Torque alloys and the standard vRS ones?

Secondly could someone confirm the standard vRS alloy sizes & what the tyre widths etc are. e.g 6.5 x 16 for the alloys and tyres 205/40 R 16?

Thirdly, if I do manage to get the same size alloys as the vRS ones would my current tyres fit straight on or does each alloy (even though it's the same size) have a different tyre diameters?, e.g 205/40 or 205/45 - hope you know what I mean :o

Finally, if I get the alloys and they are a 5 stud fitment, will they fit straight on, or would I need spacers or potentially boring out, and would my local tyre garage do this for me when fitting them?

I know there's a lot of questions there but I just want to make sure they won't adversely affect the handling/high speed cornering/affect tyre wear.

Thanks, Chris.

P.S. Image below of what they look like, if anyone could do a Photoshop it'd be appreciated, oh and offers on my current alloys welcome :D

Sorry just to add to this post, I don't actually think they are available in 5 stud fitment after all (please correct me :(), if anyone knows any alloys which look the same but are 5 stud fitments....

Milotec have an alloy like that on their website, 9 spoke though I think

if that works?

The three basic questions to consider, assuming you've already checked the wheel/tyre combination will fit within the wheelarches and the wheels are big enough to fit over the brakes, are:

Number of studs = 5

Spacing of studs (PCD = pitch circle diameter) = 100

Offset - standard = 35?; anyone confirm? another thread suggests "Wheel details are on the inside face of one of the spokes in raised print"

Get wheels with correct offset - don't go with spacers - "been there, done that!" - not recommended

As far as tyres go it's like this:

205/45/16 = 205mm wide, 45% of width in profile, 16in inside circumference.

So a 40 profile tyre at the same width will appear shallower, a 40 profile at say, 225 would potentially be deeper (haven't done the maths).

go for matrix shadows (5 spoke) only come in 5 stud and would look big as the spoke goes to the edge. the have the same finish as the torques but i personally think look better

I like them too, but they cost a small fortune :( Tbh, the nicest alloys for me anyway are the Octavia vRS ones, but if I could just get some replica's in 16" :D

Why not get some 16" Octavia vRS alloys then? You would only need the wheels as you have the tyres.

Octavia vRS alloys are 17" mate :) If I could get some in a 16" version, it'd be perfect, I dont want to affect the handling...

The vRS estate comes with 16" wheels (why, I don't know, but it does). IIRC our Irish brethren also seem to suffer from this inch loss too :ne_nau:

As Fen quite correctly pointed out the estate comes with 16" wheels as it doesnt have the bracing in the rear. And the earlier vRS come with 16's.

But they are the same in looks as the 17" alloys on the Octavia vRS only 1" smaller?

Also, if they are 16" does that mean they would be a straight switch over from my current alloys, and I wouldnt have to faff about getting new tyres, spacers etc - they would just go straight on! :D

Is it just me or are the Furby vRS alloys similar enough to the Octy alloys to not make swapping to Octy 16s worthwhile?

I seem to be one of the few people who actually likes the standard alloys on the Fabia VRS they are one of the nicest wheels I've seen that come as standard on a hot hatch.

I think there is a difference between THIS and THIS (stole the second one but it's a peach :D).

I admittadly dont mind the Fabia vRS alloys, and I wouldnt of upgraded to Octavia vRS 17" inch alloys as I hear the ride suffers quite badly, but now I know they are available in 16" they are definately on my to-do list.

Does every Octavia vRS Estate come with 16" alloys as standard?

They look like this:

Same design as the 17s

They look neat :) I bet they would be a straight switch for my Fabia vRS alloys. Are you selling them :D :D

I think the Furby wheels look much nicer than the 16" Octy alloys, no offence to any Octy owners of course. The 17's are an improvement granted, but as you say they'll probably muck up the ride and handling.

I agree that the 17's definately look better, but I compiled by own list of pros/cons.

Pro's

They Look Fantastic

Improved Handling

Room for bigger brakes at a later date

Easier to source than the 16" inch Octavia vRS alloys

Increased top speed?

Less wheelspin in theory as should get the power down better

Con's

Ride affected

Need new tyres

Have to tell insurance...

Slower 0-60's etc?

Handling might not actually be improved due to cocking up the handling balance

Costly to replace new tyres each time

Increased wear, bigger boots never seem to last as long in my experience
