Octavia Scout - Trailer Wiring

Featured Replies

Sorry if this isn't entirely Skoda/Octavia related.

After having a detachable tow bar fitted to my Octavia Scout when I bought it two years ago I've finally got around to buying a trailer to provide a little more load space for our family camping trips.

It's a little Erde 102 trailer with standard stop/tail and indicator functions. No fog or reverse lights.

I'd like to add two red LED marker lights, one on each side, and for them to operate with the tail/night lights.

Each 12V 3x LED marker light has a live and earth wire.

My question is can I simply 'T' into the current live and earth wires of the existing trailer lights as illustrated below? I have a soldering iron and heat shrink so will make sure that the joins are good.

I'm keen to learn and am struggling to find the answers to my questions online. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated!

Hi find the live and earth in the light units with a test light, and pick up off these, some units have extra spades inside, so you can add lights just by conecting spade conectors and making up a loom to the new lights ;) .Live is allways the middle of the bulb

Great, thanks for your reply, I'm fairly sure that red (brake) and black (tail) are the live wires and the white is the earth so I've located the correct wires.

To be fair the light clusters are pretty basic so the only other wire in there is the indicator (yellow).

When you say "pick up off these" does this mean I can simply splice into the wires as illustrated above?

Also, should the non-positive wire out of the LED marker light be spliced to the light clusters earth wire (white) or should I just earth it to the body of the trailer?

I'm getting confused about earthing and negative return, are they the same thing?

 If you have lucas spade connections on the trailer lamps just piggy back off them with your new cables.Earth and negative on a modern car are the same eg chassis.Or you can come off the terminal block. cheers - Stuart B)

Will this diagram work for a '10 Octavia Estate?
