Had a cheap van on offer...

Featured Replies

A pretty impressive transformation! I hope it works well for you too - always nice to see someone starting up a new business/going it alone IMO.

Good luck with your new venture.

Van is coming along nicely

Just sold the roof rack on ebay.

I set it up for bidding to start at £40 (which I would have been happy with)

collection only. So you'd think it would only appeal to fairly local people

who can pick it up.

Its been there all week with no bids and only 2 watchers

but it went mad today and ended up going for £74 with 20 odd watchers at the end

and a right little scramble at the closing minutes for the eventual buyer.

He's already paid in full via paypal and is collecting tomorrow. Top banana!

I had a bit of an email round as I need a roof rack that can cope with the weight

and size of the 8 x 4 sheet materials I often use. Nobody would recommend a 2 bar system

so I had to think again. I'd never have more than 3 or 4 sheets of anything on board at

a time so it didn't need to be super heavy duty, just robust enough for what I need.

There was a huge amount of choice and range of prices. But in the end I opted

for This one as I thought it would suit my needs.

And was very well priced compared to some I saw. The old one has paid for most of it anyway.

I think a shiny new rack will make the van look a little nicer too.

I reckon it will be lighter than the currently fitted genuine Renault one on there now.

It has some surface rust (buyer knows this) but is sound enough and was used often in the

vans last life. But it's really better suited to bags and cases in all honesty.

I'd have kept it if it had been wide enough, but it's too narrow and pretty heavy.

The van is very leany in the bends especially when it's empty.

I'll see if I can weigh it somehow. I'd be curious to see how much lighter the new one is.

I'm whipping it off in the morning. It's only 4 bolts.

Hope it stops raining though.

I did the same sort of thing with our Renault Trafic, the boss (my actual boss, not the wife) bought a roof rack and it seemed to be made of solid square steel! Really heavy and loud wind noise.

Kept it for a bit then found a aero type aluminium one from a retired BT van on eBay.

The Van sounds and handles a lot better now, Fuel consumption even went down.

Good result that - and as Dave says, the new one should also help you out in other ways

Chap came tonight to collect it.

Bang on time and dead chuffed with what he bought from me.

When I took it off this morning i saw that one of the mounting bolts

had corroded so badly that the thread had swollen and distorted.

I couldn't sell it to the man like that, so I went to the local

car spares shop and bought 4 new identical high tensile M8 bolts

so the man could fit it properly when he arrived. The 4 cost £1.70

The plastic nut caps even fitted the new bolts. Result!

When the chap came he was very pleased that I had bothered to do that

and gave me the 4 plastic blanks from his van as he didn't need them anymore.

Handy as I had to plug the holes with some ptfe tape wrapped M8 coachbolts

I had lying around. It's rained here all day so I had to do something.

Paid for the new rack Sunday night so hopefully it will be here tomorrow.

Pics when it's on

Always good when you deal with decent, reasonable people emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Good result all round then.
