V6 Update (Long)

Featured Replies

So now done a little over 1,000miles in my V6 and have an update.

Due to work and family commitments the running in period took a little longer than I first thought.

So what are my thoughts, likes and dislikes.

Positives:

I love the engine  it pulls like a train and even on my self imposed limit of 3k rpm its quick  (taken it to 4k a couple of times, which is my new limit until fully run in at 1500 miles, better noise and even more grunt).

The ride is great, not too harsh but good feel (for a big estate) especially on the 18" wheels.

3 spoke wheel nice to hold and seats comfy but also a good and sporty fit for my fat as*e.

.

Dash very clear and easy to read with nice build quality.

Rear wiper clears entire rear screen.

Mirrors nice and big, give great view behind of all those shocked people being passed by a Skoda!. :moon:

Door handles, (inside) with soft rubber backs.

DSG Gearbox, instant changes and great with paddles (but see below).

Cabin space.

Xenon Headlights, truly brilliant.

LED DRL's look cool.

4 wheel drive, puts power down and got me in and out of Glastonbury despite grass and mud but also getting out of junctions when you need to just GO.

Brakes are stunning, bigger than on other Superbs and while a little over servoed still great.

Items less happy with:

Carpets, yes we all know they are crap.

Door pockets feel cheap and should be lined with something to stop rattles

.

Vortex at speed in heavy rain that sends water across front windows from A pillar.

Dsg gearbox, not so smooth going uphill in reverse.

Remembering to use handbrake on a slope, despite hill hold (getting used to this not being a normal Auto).

Variable floor, when loading stuff inside cubby holes sat on floor and thought the floor would break!

Black paint has too much silver flek in it so looks dusty even for the 5mins it is clean.

The clank not THUNK when shutting tailgate (could be mis aligned by Towbar fit?).

Bonnet not very solid, on my old Audi the bonnet did not flex when you polish it like on the Skoda.

Size of fuel tank,( see below)

Now the question you all want answered FUEL CONSUMPTION! You Oil Burners sit yourselfs down.

Well I collected the car from Top Sales guy James and had a slow drive through South London Friday night rush hour traffic then a couple of days of North London traffic.

First refuel the MFI indicated a range of...........................wait for it..................................220 miles to next refuel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we all know that Hans Christian Anderson programmed the computer, next refuel said 450 miles to refuel.

I am averaging about 28mpg which I am very happy with, I do a low average annual mileage (less then 10k) and am fortunate enough to be able to afford the pleasure of the Big engine I wanted.

A bigger fuel tank would help range but I still get about 350 miles per tank.

So overall very happy, for the price its fantastic. Not quite Audi quality but its about £20k less!!!!!!

Would and have recommended the Superb estate to several people, maybe not the V6 its a special car but not for everyone but if you want space with (BIG) pace it is Ace. (lol I am a poet)

170 DSG and the first tank was less that 300. Second was 330 and the next two both around 450 - but I'm only half way through the 4th tank full.

The MPG has been coming up all the time. Average now shows 38 to the gallon according to Mr Anderson

The 3.6 V6 Estate Superb is nowadays, my dream car.

Nice post :)

Glad it's all going well

Hi sadgit1, very comprehensive review.

I am generally impressed with my 1.8tsi and the damaged bumper cover is being replaced next week, so hopefully the car will be pristine again. I am driving my old BMW most of the time as I still have not found a buyer. However I have done 260 mls in the Superb and these our my first impressions.

Likes:

Quite and smooth and rides better than the Beemer, particularly on rough roads.

Looks good, although the rear end is a bit plain.

DSG good and I have not experienced it running back on hills.

Like all the toys although the sat nav confused me a bit, being used to a Garmin portable.

Look forward to loading my music with SD card, which one did you use?

Need a new phone as my old one is not compatable.

Electric tailgate works well, bit slow closing and won't close by fob operation, unlike the BMW. No clank though

Not So Keen:

Carpets, why Skoda skimp on this when the rest of the cabin is good quality is beyond me!

DSG is a bit lumpy when reversing.

Agree with you about the bonnet although not sure it matters much.

Seats are comfortable but do worry a bit regarding comments about wear.

Envy you the performance of the V6, I decided I needed a bit better fuel consumption and went for the 1.8, it is very adequate, although like you my mileage, will only be around 10- 12k a year.

Really need to get rid of the BEEMER now so I can concentrate on the Superb. I will update you when I put a few more miles on the car.

Depreciation is probably going to be higher on petrol engine models but I do prefer them to diesel.

Hi Hamro

New member in New Zealand - have had a Superb V6 for about 7 months - fantastic car. Your comment about the rear end being a bit plain is spot on - and the local dealer has worked some magic ! Just fitted a chrome trim across the bottom of the tailgate (to match the trims down the side of the car) - does wonders, especially against the black paint. He's now fitting these trims to all estates - makes a real difference.

Hi

No SD 4 me, have MDI so plug in IPhone for music.

Yes the comments about seat wear are a worry, the seats on my old Audi were still great after 130,000 miles.

Doesn't the Columbus unit in the V6 have an SD card slot, or do you mean you just don't use it?

Nice review by the way. Would love a V6.... if I could stomach the fuel costs :)

Not sure I'd have picked Black Magic on a Superb either, and this is from someone who's owned four Skodas now in that colour :) - are you perhaps regretting that decision?

The premium brands appear to last well, my Beemer is 9 years old with 140k and the leather interior is still good. Come to think of it the exhaust is still original and the battery lasted 7 years. The other benefit is chain cam engines, I assume the VAG engine uses a cam belt. Having said all that you certainly pay a premium price, the equivalant BMW to the Superb I have was £17k more. Over the years whenever I have changed cars the new one has always seemed a bit lightweight compared with the old but I think this is just new technology with lighter materials being used giving better performance and economy. Back to the leather seats, it would be useful to have comments from hatchback owners which has been around for 3 years. Overall the quality of the Superb seems fine and the drive is better or equals anything else I have owned.

Hi Wardy

I imagine the Columbus does have SD slot (not looked) but has my music on the IPhone so see no need of SD card.

With regard to the colour, I was unimpressed with ALL the colours available for the Superb.

Would have liked a dark Charcoal Grey but Black gets lots of admiring glances and looks good (when clean which is not a long term pleasure) but the fleck in Black Magic gives a look that appears 'dusty' rather then the 'wet' look of solid black paint of some cars, if that makes sense?

Good review - I have the Superbs younger, sportier, smaller brother - Fabia vRS Estate.

I too was shocked by my first fill up (only 45 litres though compared to your 60 litre or more?) which read 250 miles lol :) Second tank revealed 400 miles although I will only just reach 300 miles.

The running in period is a pain, especially for petrol engined cars as some of them do sing nicely above the suggested 3-4k rpm! Looking forward to the day I use Sport mode on the DSG B)

Tip for DSG reverse, after selecting 'R' release the brake pedal and prod the accelerator until it starts to move, it should in theory reverse itself up an incline? Mine does anyway! You do however, have to be quite gentle with the pedal otherwise reverse warp speed is activated
