Poor performance tdi

Featured Replies

Greetings you guys. Hopefully someone can cast some light on my problem.

I am the proud owner of an Octavia 1.9TDi glx with the 90 agr engine.

I bought her as a non runner, with mot till september this year, with service history, and only 87000 on the clock. it had been stood for roughly 6 months and the battery was completely dead, which i re charged off the vehicle.

I tinkered about a bit, and found that relay 109 was defective, and replaced it with a new genuine vw unit.

This cured the non running part, and i have covered almost 2000 miles since then.

My problem is that i just have no get up and go. the acceleration is dire, and verging on the unsafe. There are no fault codes logged on the ecus, and she starts and ticks over beautifully. she even returns fantastic fuel economy averaging just over62mpg on my latest trip up to Bradford from Lincolnshire.

if i remove the inlet pipe from the intercooler to the manifold, and blip the throttle, there is a healthy whoosh of air, so i presume the turbo is working ok.

Overtaking, is something i dare not do anymore, unless it is a bicycle or a tractor.

The problem was made more apparent the other day when i was left for dead by an SDI version the same age.

Please can someone help?

Unplug the MAF, & if the car runs better you have a knackered MAF.

NO!!!!!! you need to get a genuine VAG MAF. Aftermarket MAF's don't work properly in my experience.

Go to a dealer/TPS for a MAF, otherwise you might find yourself buying lots of ebay cheapo MAFs as they fail, or give the wrong readings to the ECU.

They are £68 from TPS! Get a GENUINE one!!!!

Ok ok. i will buy a genuine one.

Just for interest sake, will fitting a new unit make it perform even better than with the faulty one disconnected? and is the car ok to drive with the maf disconnected untill the new one arrives, or should i re connect the thing?

Performance should be about the same as with the MAF unplugged. Running with the MAF disconnected is fine.

Yes it will be even better, as the MAF will inform the ECU the correct amount of fuel/air mixture required for optimum engine efficiency for performance and fuel economy.

You are okay to run short term until you get a new one. Is there a TPS in Lincoln? If not the guys at Nottingham are really pleasant and helpful and will serve you even if not trade. Apparently some other branches can refuse to serve you if not!

There is a TPS in Peterborough, i spoke to a nice chap called Barry, and even reserved a timing belt kit at the same time.

I am a truck mechanic by trade, and do a bit of tinkering, and basic servicing for people at the weekend, and he told me that was good enough.

Thanks again for all your help. :)
