Oil Topup

Featured Replies

Hi All

Can't believe I need to top up with oil having only done 6500 miles since my service and that's driving it nice. Anyway, I am due to have a service in 6 weeks so don't want to go to the Skoda dealer and get charge large amounts for a litre of oil.

I have looked at the manual which is pretty pants for oil grades. I have some semi synthetic 15w40 from my old 2.8td Shogun, could I use this ok? or what should I be using? It's a 1.4tdi by the way

Cheers

Glenn

You need VW spec 505.1 oil for yearly service or the better 506.01 for variable or yearly servicing. Most VW PD oil nowadays is 507.00 which cover the old specs.

Just make sure your oil is suitable for VW PD (Pumpe Düse) Engines. These PD TDI engines have unit injectors and the oil needs a high shear strength or you ruin your cam shaft.

So look at the label on the oil container and confirm those VW spec numbers.

If it's getting an oil change anyway in 6 weeks then why bother unless it is really low.

Oh bugger. I had to put some in which was about half a litre to get me out of trouble. Says nothing about PD engines just VW505.00

So what are my options now. Will the small amount mix ok and cause no problems or am I looking at an oil change

Thanks

Couple of things....when you first checked the oil was the engine cold (not been used for at least 1hr?) and what was the make/type of oil that you put it?? Have you checked the makers web site for full specs?? It might be ok??? But does sound like drain down about 1/2lt then add a can of Wynns engine flush then let engine idle for 15mins, then fully drain oil for 1hr then refill with correct oil and replace the oil filter as well!!! The website does not say much to be honest. Was hoping the small amount mixed with the proper stuff would be ok. I will get a filter and do an oil change. Why use an engine flush? If I run the engine so it's warm and then allow to drain, I would have thought it would be better than having a touch of flush left in the system.

Engine flush (Wynns) if you follow the instructions on the can.........it breaks down the "varnish" and other crap (mainly in the sump) that forms in the engine, and if you leave it to drain for 1hr....you won't have anything "left" in the engine!! Been using that stuff for the past 18yrs in different cars with no problems!!! I tend to do a flush every second oil change!! B)
