DAB for amundsen

Featured Replies

I'm hearing that DAB might be available soon for the sat nav systems, but as i'm getting my superb soon it looks like i'll miss out. Any chance of getting it retro fitted??

As far as I am aware the UK will not currently be getting DAB in the Amundsen. The Amundsen DAB in the rest of the EU uses a system known as DAB+ which is a more modern version of our 30 year old DAB system. Our system developed in the 1980's is not compatible with the system being rolled out across the rest of the EU, so VAG would have to develop and manufacture different headunits for the UK.

That post confuses me then, because I thought that DAB+ sets could decode DAB, but not the other way round.

Also aiui DAB radios that are being sold now, are future proofed, ie they can either already pick up DAB+ or are easily upgradeable.

Which if both those are true means that the manufacturers only need to install DAB+ sets.

Note I'm not a radio expert, this was just information gleaned after some googling when we were looking for a radio for Mrs S that we wanted to work both in UK and Sweden.

good hunting for that one

I just double checked mine after checking the manual again, it's a new Amundsen Plus (3 button jobbie). car was built at the beginning of June and the manual says Yes to DAB, but the head unit 100% does not have the feature or the function.

Mine's being shipped so may have been built slightly after yours, again its a 1.8tsi, SE plus in estate form, so I will look at the sat nav closely and let u know what i find!

The Plot thickens, I am going to drop the Amundsen + out of mine tomorrow as I have a Columbus to go in.

BUT.

Trawling through German forums and Technisat, the manufacturers site yields some interesting information;

1. They all have integrated Bluetooth, and this can be enabled in VCDS, so no actual need for the Telephone Prep on the SE Plus spec.

2. They all have DAB, however Skoda do NOT fit a DAB antenna, so the connector is supposed to be on the back of the unit, and you can fit a DAB Antenna and switch on DAB in VCDS

I am pulling my unit tomorrow so will post pic's on what I find, but the "chatter" on the German forums is that it's VAG stamping the "Value" label on Skoda, and Skoda not fitting DAB Antenna's.

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/images/pdf/rns-315-specs.pdf has the manufacturers info in PDF Format

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a6/rns315-GPS-FAQ-VW.htm showing a retro fit to a VW (But all unit's are the same it seems apart from the lighting / facia)

For VCDS - DAB unlock: Disable address 37 byte 3 bit 4. There is an error entry, if a DAB antenna is not connected

Fluff'

Oh well

The Plot weakens, no DAB on my Amundsen Plus, the Antenna connector is not on the rear of the head unit, and there is no additional DAB antenna wire bundled in at the back of the dash anywhere that I can see.
