Sorry is there is a well known answer to this - I only picked up my Furby vRS 2 weeks ago...(and loving it!).

In normal conditions the traction control works fine, but in this nasty weather we are having, it doesn't seem to kick in at all - I can quite happily wheelspin down the road without it caring. :confused:

Anyone?

Traction control does not work in the snow / ice. The handbook advises to turn it off. I always turn it off regardless of conditions - it only slows you down.

It is working.... but theres only so much power it can scrub off... in the rain i can happily spin away with TC on in 3rd... try doing it with the tc off and youll redline it :D

only third.. i used to manage it in 5th!

Ordinary ASR with a gentle-ish right foot seems pretty effective to me. Too much throttle on patchy roads causes some right jolts and thuds as the wheels find and then lose traction, but I can only imagine it'd be worse trying to do the same thing with it off?

It does seem better on than off for 99.9% of the driving I do. For instance, I tried to turn right out of a junction in a hurry with the ASR off the other day, and all I did was generate Starsky and Hutch-type smoke and very little forward progress... :eek:

It would be good to get input on ESP-equipped cars - mainly as that's what I've got on order :rofl:

Its difficult to say unless someone has driven both.. ive driven Audis (a4, a6) with ESP and i can see the benifit with a big car with spoingy suspension.. but not sure if it would be effective on a small wheelbase car.

The thing that was confusing me was that, normally, the light flashes when TCS is kicking in. In snow it doesn't.

I drove an ESP equipped car when I ordered mine - it appeared to be completely ineffective in the wet, so I can only imagine what would happen if you tried to 'test' it in snow!!

You should always remember that TC will only work after the wheels have spun - It can't anticipate a wheel spin.

Must admit using some sense whilst driving off appears to be the best approach anyway :D

After all, my highly powered ;) Rover 100 with 1.1 petrol engine can do power slides in the wet :rofl: - hardly convincing in this context, I know ;)

I think you need to remove the lead from your boot ;)

Mine worked fine yesterday I tried to provoke wheelspin on an empty ice and snow covered road, the revs increased slightly then died off ,this was in second and third gear.

You need to be progresive with the pedal, instead of slapping it down.

I haven't when pulling off in a straight line either - it's only when pulling away whilst turning. Without the ASR on, the inside wheel sometimes loses traction if the surface is slippy or whatever. Keep it switched on, and it's generally OK. Easy peasy... :thumbup:

Anyway, each to their own. I'd rather use the technology if it's there - I paid for it after all! ;)

Can I just confirm then, that the Traction Control on both the Octavia & Fabia

is switched on by default & only swithed off when you press the button?

Our Fabia was stuck in our lane yesterday morning on ice & the Traction ASR control did not work..

@charles - yep, default is ON, which means the dash-light is OFF (unless it is actively working, it will flash on then, on ice possibly appearing permanently on).

When you press in the button, the dash-light will come on permanently and you've disabled that feature.

ASR/ESP only provide assistance to some extent, they cannot solve the fundamental underlying problem of insufficient grip to put the amount of force applied through the tyre-contact with the road.

Best way to sort this tends to be being gentle with the throttle or alternatively if it's really that bad, just don't bother driving...

On Fabia's and Octavia's with EDL turning the ASR off does not disable the EDL.

EDL, Electronic Differential Lock. It's part of the ASR on nearly all Skoda's with ASR apart from the Fabia vRS for some reason.

How much lock does the EDL go up to? I'd be surprised if it was more than 30%

It doesn't actually lock the diff up, what it does at, slow speeds only, is to apply the brake to the wheel that's spinning and thus transfering the torque to the other wheel with more grip.

It's been very handy this week, especially when you have one wheel on ice.

I used to have a Mondeo V6 a few years ago and Fords version of EDL was switched off with the tracion control button. In snow with traction control turned off you could be completely stuck. Turn in back on and the car would just pull away with out a problem.
