Towbar Coding Problem

Featured Replies

I wrote that statement before it was done. And I had expected a Skoda dealer to have been able to do all the software upgrading but alas it seems a bit of a problem due to the way their machines work in making it tres difficult for the technicians to easily tick all the boxes. And it seems SUK does not give them a complete check list of what to tick either.

So what made me suspect it was wrong? Well first time I had had no idea since I did not own a trailer by then so could not test it. When I got the trailer though I realised that the reversing sensors did not switch off nor did the car's fog lamp switch off (leaving only the trailer's on) or the alarm go off when you plugged the trailer out with the car locked. So back again. This time it came back with the latter two working but the sensors still beeping when I selected reverse and no trailer pictogram on the Bolero. But as luck would have it I passed Martin's place on a day we were both off so he kindly agreed to look at this and voila, all the above things now fixed. Though in saying that is there any way to check that the trailer ESP is working?! I think not so I just trust that has been ticked, though I won't ever tow a caravan so I'm not too concerned about that.

Thanks for that, I guess I just have to hope for the best, obviously I will be able to check the sensors, pictogram and fogs but I do often pull a trailer weighing up to 2000Kg so the ESP mod is possibly important! I would really like to know how this can be checked short of a real emergency situation.

Mine goes in to Allams for final (re)coding (I hope) on Monday and a service. Lets see if they have sorted it......emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

If not I may have to have an emergency visit to see you.......as towing 'van next friday night......

Providing I am around then not a problem Mike

Mike, mine is the same! I towed the caravan recently and found out that the rear sensors are not disabled nor the car reversing lights and no pictogram.

I sent an email to SUK a couple of days ago asking for the definitive results of recoding and what towbar prep comprises but no reply yet.

Fred,

The correct coding doesn't turn the reversing LIGHTS off, just the reversing sensors and the car rear fog light.

Thanks for that. It's the main reason that I sent the query to SUK as there are so many variables and I don't think even SUK know what they are.

Still no reply from SUK.

And here is the proof!

Interesting, your graphic is aligned East/West mine is aligned North/South.

It is because I have front and rear parking sensors and you have only rear ones! And the front ones are still active when the rear ones are deactivated when you have a trailer attached.

so that is what it should look like.........emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Elsie is at Allams at the moment. Not sure they can do the programming, so collecting later. I need to find somebody on here quick to sort out before the weekend!

Can someone clarify for me, does the engine have to be running for the pictogram to appear and the reversing sensors to be muted/disabled?

Still no reply from SUK!

To take the picture I posted above I put the key in the ignition, turned it so the dash lights lit up, put the car in reverse and voila it was there with not continuous beeping from the sensors. I did not have to start the engine.

Thanks Johaan, that confirms my suspicion that the recoding either wasn't done or wasn't done correctly.

Hi,

Got the trailer coding done today at my local garage and all seem to be well.

What does happen is:-

1. Car fog light is disabled.

2. Display shows trailer when reverse is engaged.

3. Rear sensors are disabled.

4. Trailer bulb failure works on all bulbs except fog light, not really a big problem but interesting.

What does not happen is the Alarm is not triggered by disconnecting trailer lights, is this perhaps because I have 7 pin electrics only.

Anyone got this feature working with 7 pin electrics?

I've got 13pin electrics on the car and use a 7 pin converter to attach the trailer. All the above works on mine including the alarm. I've even seen the blown bulb warning too - in error, since when I stopped and switched car on and off it had gone and in fact all the bulbs were working fine on the trailer!

I have the 13 in socket but it has only 7 of the pins connected, I used the wiring kit Ref. Code: EEA630002E4 for Vehicles With Factory Prep. (Single Electrics)

Did you have the full Caravan wiring kit fitted?

Elsie the Helipad is now correctly coded thanks to Gizmo68.

My fog light turns off when trailer connected (Allams got this part right)

I have a piccie of car and trailer like 900k

My parking sensors no longer work when connected.

Detachable towbar selected in the coding.

Once again, many thanks to Martin.

That's good news Mike. From that it looks as if it would be pointless for me to go back to Allams for mine to be corrected. I wonder what the problem is that Skoda can't seem to get it right with their equipment but a car owner with a laptop and suitable cable/software can?

STILL no reply from SUK.

UPDATE. 6/8/11

I got fed up with waiting for SUK to reply so I emailed Skoda Cz.

They replied that they would pass my query to SUK!

I did eventually get a reply from Will Fisher,Customer Relations Manager.

My original email requested specific details of what was included in Towbar Prep and what changes should I expect after recoding?

The reply from Will Fisher didn't exactly give me any confidence;

Thank you for your email received by our colleagues in the Czech Republic. I have investigated your concerns through our

Technical Department and am now in a position to respond.

My colleagues in the Technical Department have advised that no towing mechanism details are displayed on the screen of your

vehicle's Bolero when it is hitched up to a caravan.

When you mention "OPS", could you confirm that you are referring to parking sensors as this acronym is not known to us.

No answers to any of my other questions

As any Yeti owner (and probably many other Skoda models) will know,if you have parking sensors fitted and you select reverse the Bolero indicates "OPS Optical Parking System"!

If the SUK Technical really don't recognise this "acronym" what else are they unfamiliar with about their products?

I am now awaiting a reponse to my reply to Will Fisher........

PS I am pursuing this through SUK as I think they ought to be aware that there is a problem with their understanding of towbar recoding and few dealers seem able to do it correctly. Another thing is that I have checked the VCDS section and can't find anyone closer to me than Kent. :(

Edited by g6zru

I appreciate the VAS system is not as easy as VCDS to use, but you would of thought the operators would of had some in house training / documented instructions on how to use their own equipment to correctly code something, that ATEOTD they are charging a not insignificant amount of money to fit wouldn't you?

STILL no reply from SUK.

Fred

Am I surprised? emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

find a local with VCDS to sort out for you.

I really think Skoda UK should give us the option of a factory fitted towbar option, based on the problems many of us have had with fitting/varying different cost and the coding problems.

Somebody somewhere in Skoda UK should know how to code their own cars, and pass the information onto their dealer network. This situation is ridiculous.

With all these issues with the coding with Skoda, does anyone know if VW are getting it wrong aswell.

I assume VW's run the same system software, so does anyone know of someone with a brand spanky new VW that has or hasn't had issues.

If VW's are getting it correct then why not Skoda emoticon-0112-wondering.gif.
